Most Paper Collected in 24 hours set Guinness World Records

Cintas, a leader in secure document management services, announced recently that along with the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) it broke the Guinness World Record for most paper collected in 24 hours. As part of the third annual Protect Your Identity Week, Cintas partnered with the CBBB and NFCC to provide free shredding services for consumers at more than 175 identity theft protection events nationwide. Three events were specifically tracked for the Guinness record attempt in Irvine, Calif., Southfield, Mich. and Cherry Hill, N.J. on Oct. 23. A total of 31,979 pounds of personal, confidential documents were collected and shredded. The previous record held was 2,204 pounds.

"We are thrilled we broke a world record by uniting with community members to take a stand against identity theft," said Karen Carnahan, President and COO, Cintas Document Management. "Identity theft is a serious problem and we are pleased to have partnered with the CBBB and NFCC to provide consumers across the nation with our secure shredding services."

Cintas shredded a total of 1,132,000 pounds of confidential documents during Protect Your Identity Week. All of the paper collected was recycled into secondary paper products, such as paper towels, to reduce waste and impact on the environment. In doing so, consumers across the nation helped save trees, energy and water while reducing green house gas emissions.

"Protect Your Identity Week provides consumers with the education, tools and resources they need to protect themselves against identity theft," said Bob Ensinger, COO, NFCC. "We are delighted with the success of the week and had fun breaking a world record for a good cause."

Cintas is the first North American AAA NAID-certified and PCI DSS compliant document management provider. It provides cost-effective document shredding, storage and imaging programs. Cintas' services are designed to provide businesses with data privacy and security, compliance with regulatory requirements and greater control and access to information.

"We are pleased with how many community members came out to participate in the events," said Stephen A. Cox, President and CEO, CBBB. "With the combined forces of our organizations, this has been the most successful Protect Your Identity Week to date."

Susan Boyle secures trio of Guinness World Records

Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle has landed three entries in the new book of Guinness World Records.
The West Lothian vocalist, who last week sang for the Pope, shot to fame on the 2009 series of Britain's Got Talent.
Since then she has achieved worldwide fame and her debut album, entitled I Dreamed a Dream, became the fastest-selling record of the year.

She has now been officially inducted into the record book for the fastest-selling record by any female in the UK, the most successful debut album in Britain and as the oldest artist to see a first record hit the number one spot, both at home and in the US.

Boyle, 49, said: "I used to read this book as a wee girl. I never dreamt that one day I would actually appear in the Guinness Book of Records. I only ever wanted to sing and perform. This is truly fantastic."
In becoming the oldest singer to record a chart-topper, she broke the previous record, set by Jane McDonald, by some 13 years.

University of Alberta's sets Guinness World Records for dodge ball tournament

EDMONTON — Guinness World Records recently recognized the University of Alberta’s epic winter dodge ball tournament as a record breaker, but an American university is already claiming it deserves the honour instead.

George Mason University claims it had 1,257 participants turn out for a dodge ball game Sept. 3 in Fairfax, Virginia, beating the 1,198 participants at the U of A last February.

However, while the Edmonton-based university ordered 600 dodge balls direct from Sweden for the event, the American university used only 100 balls. That goes against Guinness’s rules, said U of A Students’ Union vice-president Rory Tighe.

The record granting agency said there must be one ball for every two people in a record breaking dodge ball game, he said.

“It’s fairly clear to me. I applaud them on their effort, but I’d ask them to try again next year.”

Butterbean Festival goes for place in Guinness World Records

Alabama Butterbean Festival officials are unveiling a 4-foot tall, 7-foot wide, 1,000-pound metal pot on Friday as part of their plan for the annual festival to be in "Guinness World Records."

The unveiling will be at noon at Bradford & Hines Custom Metal Fabrication, 3200 Sixth Ave. North, Birmingham.

Festival officials are attempting to earn a place in Guinness for the largest pot of baked beans.

Bradford & Hines built the pot using stainless steel plates provided by another Birmingham company, Phoenix Metals Co. The pot can hold 1,200 gallons, which exceeds the current 832-gallon record, Guinness officials said.

The 2010 Alabama Butterbean Festival will be Sept. 4 in Pinson.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 22 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Thirty years ago, Thienna Ho and her family were Vietnamese boat people who survived a brutal attack by Thai pirates during a treacherous voyage on their way to their new home in San Francisco. Now Thienna is a super-athlete who has broken Guinness World Records (GWR) for feats of strength and endurance. On August 14, 2010 she plans to take the men's Guinness World Record for the most weight dead lifted in one hour.

Tallest Man in America : Guinness World Records

Guinness World Records declared that Igor Vovkovinskiy has been crowned the new Tallest Living Man in America. Measuring a astounding 7 feet 8.33 inches, the very tall 27-year old traveled from Minnesota to New York City where Guinness World Record officials certified his claim on the set of The Dr. Oz Show. Igor beat out the previous record-holder, Virginia deputy sheriff George Bell, by a third of an inch.

"Igor had been on our radar for a while, so we were eager to measure him and see if he was, in fact, the Tallest Living Man in America," said Guinness World Records judge Danny Girton Jr. "Following stringent Guinness World Record guidelines on dimension, we're pleased to confirm that Igor is now a part of record-breaking history."

Upon compliant the Guinness World Record, Igor said, "It feels good to finally have proof that I am the Tallest Man in America. Everyone is always asking me if I'm certain that I'm the tallest and I was never able to prove it. Now that I have this certificate to hang on my wall, I could finally show it!"

Originally from the Ukraine, Igor moved to Minnesota with his mother Svetlana when he was 7-years old. With a size 24 10-E shoe, Igor faces challenges daily including fitting into cars, finding comfortable shoes and squeezing into desks at the Minnesota School of Business where he is pursuing a degree in paralegal studies. He's found solace in organizations like the Tall Club International where he's made lasting friendships with other tall people like himself.

Igor now joins the Tallest Living Man, Sultan Kosen (Turkey), who measures in at 8 feet 1 inch and the Tallest Man Ever, Robert Wadlow (US) who stood an amazing 8 feet 11.1 inches tall in the Guinness World Records pantheon.

World's Oldest Man Dies at 138 in India

Habib Miyan played the clarinet in a maharajah's orchestra before retiring 70 years ago.

However, there is much dispute over his actual age. Although he said he was 138 years old, his pension book showed him to be a mere stripling at 129 - and the Guinness Book of Records has been unable to verify his age at all.

Miyan, who lived in Jaipur in western India, had no birth certificate but has collected a state pension for decades. He once worked in the court of the king of Jaipur - Raja Man Singh, where he played in the wind section of the orchestra.

A crowd of thousands attended Miyan's funeral - demonstrating the fame to which he had risen in the state of Rajasthan. He died after suffering fever and dysentery, his niece Munni told reporters.

Miyan sprang to the attention of the world in 1998, when a bank clerk called Rajesh Nagpal decided to look up the records of the venerable old man who had been collecting his pension for as long as anyone could remember.

Six years later he became one of the oldest people to make the pilgrimage to Mecca - a lifelong goal for the devout Muslim.

The visit was exceptional: Miyan, who had been blind for more than 50 years and suffered limited mobility, spent most of his time at home praying and telling stories to his enormous extended family of 140 people.

"If you treat your body well, the body will treat you well," Miyan always said, according to a relative.

King of Magic David Blaine upcoming world record Stunt

A King of Magic David Blaine will attempt to stay awake for longer than anyone has before in his latest record-breaking stunt, it was claimed today.

The illusionist is expected to appear in New York’s Central Park next May.

And he said he is already training for something - despite refusing to confirm what the new performance would be.

Celebrity columnist Cindy Adams reported: “He’ll break the world record for staying awake. “Understand, David neither confirmed nor denied his coming feat. But, trust me. I mean, trust me. I mean, who do you believe? David Blaine Himself - or me!”

Cornwall’s Tony Wright claims the current world record for sleep deprivation - after staying awake for more than 11 days, or 266 hours.

His attempt does not feature in Guinness World Records because it has stopped acknowledging such attempts for health reasons.

Blaine - who refused to explicitly confirm the sleep stunt was taking place - told the New York Post he was already training. He said: “I’m dropping 30 pounds.

“I do two hours every day on the treadmill. I’m on a raw diet that includes brown rice. No red meat. No animal products besides cooked fish.

“If I do this thing, which you claim I’m doing, I’ll do it on my feet. Standing up. It’s been tried before. In 1959, Peter Tripp stayed awake eight days, but it resulted in permanent brain damage. In 1964, 17-year-old Randy Gardner did it for a high school science project.

He lasted 111/2 days but recovered fully. No damage. A guy in London tried but fell short. Another did 19 hours but slept two hours each night, so that doesn’t count. Also he was seated in a rocking chair.”

He added: “After 36 hours of sleep deprivation it’s like being drunk, 72 hours and paranoia sets in, Day Four the mind goes into hallucinations and you’re dreaming while awake. The problem is there’s no way to know how to offset brain damage or to train for this because there isn’t sufficient research. I believe the first guy’s mistake was not being in great physical condition. Also he used stimulants to keep awake, which I assume did him in.”

He continued: “Basically I’m a human guinea pig pushing the borders of human endurance, so I’ve spent the last year and a half figuring out this next step. Preparing for it. Prepare, study, train, learn and you face the fear. When I know something’s coming I’m not afraid.

If right now a giant spider suddenly landed on me, I’d be terrified. But if I knew one’s about to land on me, I’d prepare for it. “The way to train against fear is to prep against it.”
A spokesman for Blaine was unavailable for comment.

New York-born Blaine, 34, has previously spent more than a month suspended in a transparent plastic box above the river Thames in London, and frozen in a case of ice in New York’s Times Square, among other stunts.

Longest Clothline Guinness World Record 2007

The city of Toluca in central Mexico is seeking a place in the Guinness Book of Records by putting up a clothesline 40 km long with room to hang some 70,000 articles of clothing, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.

Jaime Lopez, head of Young Toluca, a municipality organisation dedicated to developing programmes for young people, said the project managed to collect 35 tonnes of clothes in a month.

The previous record was set in 2005 by students of the Monterrey Institute of Technology, which strung a 37-km clothesline in the state of Morelos, also in central Mexico.

The idea this time is to donate the articles of clothing used in the record-breaking attempt 'to some of the 15,000 neediest people in the municipality' who suffer from the biting winter cold, Lopez said.

They will also deliver a considerable amount of clothes, above all items that are useful in a warm climate, to those left homeless by the recent floods in the southern states of Tabasco and Chiapas.

Stringing the immense clothesline started Sunday in Alameda Park 2000 on the south side of Toluca, said Lopez, who hopes the work will be finished by next Friday.

To collect the clothes, Young Toluca called for the public cooperation on the radio and publicized the event with the help of schools, companies and citizen-participation committees.

The structure consists of 34 clotheslines, each approximately 75 meters (246 feet) long and with eight levels.

Each level has a double clothesline, making a total of 40.1 km.

Every day some 50 people come to put up the clotheslines, most of them volunteers from academic institutions and Toluca City Hall.

The Guinness organization requires that the record be verified by a notary and three independent witnesses, and that it receive 20 photographs of the event and an unedited video travelling all 40 kilometers of the clothesline.

It also requires that the distance between articles of clothing be no greater than 6 cm, that the clothesline have the traditional clothespins for hanging out the clothes and that the clothesline be continuous.

Guinness World Record - Leaves Man with Sore Knees

A man attempting to break a Guinness World Record of most distance crawled had to stop after a few hours due to bleeding knees and sore knuckles.

Forty-eight year-old shipping and receiving clerk Tim James explained that the feat was intended for him to be able to leave "a nice little legacy for my ancestors to come across."
His track was laid out as mats around the inside of his office building, the Buford Lewis Printing Co. To reach the record, James needed to do 700 laps.

The crawl was intended for 35 miles, in 45 hours. The starting time was 5:30 pm Friday, and James expected to finish at around mid-Sunday.

At around 10:30 p.m. Friday, Tim's wife spotted the injuries that James had sustained, and insisted that he stop.

"I realized I hadn't gained very much ground in five hours, and I realized it was going to take ma a lot longer than I thought," Political Gateway quoted James.

The idea of breaking that particular record came to the aspiring clerk by recalling that as a former plumber, he spent a considerable amount of time crawling on all fours.

"I said, 'That's something I could probably actually do'," The Tennessean quoted James.
James had previously attempted to break the record, as he tried crawling on the corner of Harding Place and Nolensenville road. He stopped after 14 miles, as it began to rain and he had started to slip.

The record is currently held by two Colorado college students, whose 44-hour, 32.26-mile crawl put them through torrential rain, lightning and hail. Their crawl was in order to raise money for pediatric AIDS research.

Frenchman Sets Mental Math Calculation Record

A Frenchman set a new world record for mental arithmetic at Queens Museum of Sciences in New York on Thursday, solving the cube root of a 200 digit number in just 72.4 seconds.

Alexis Lemaire, now studying for a doctorate in artificial intelligence in Reims, France, had to work with a 17-line number generated by a computer. His answer, in less than two minutes, was 2,397,207,667,966,701 (or 2 quadrillion, 397 trillion, 207 billion, 667 million, 966,701).

"The first digit is easy and so is the last, but the middle ones are very hard," said Lemaire, adding that anyone can do it, but he has a high-speed mind and at times his brain works very, very rapidly.

Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston set Joint World Record

Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston have more than a certain Hollywood actor in common after bagging joint place for most powerful actress.

Officials at the Guinness World Records came to the decision after comparing the earning power of several celebrities and the publicity surrounding them.

Jennifer's love life has been under the microscope since she split from ex-hubby Brad Pitt, who then hooked up with Angelina.

The couple, branded Brangelina, have not been out of the headlines since, with their ever-growing adopted family and the birth of their own daughter Shiloh last year.

There is also talk of a possible Oscar nomination for Angelina for her critically acclaimed role as the wife of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl in A Mighty Heart.

Tom Cruise knocked Johnny Depp off the top spot to regain his crown as most powerful actor, with the help of his recent box office success and the constant coverage of his marriage to Katie Holmes and the birth of their daughter Suri.

Meanwhile, Samuel L Jackson set a world record for the highest grossing actor at the box office, starring in 75 films that have raked in more than £3.95 billion globally.

Largest Bikini Photo shoot world record

A TOTAL of 1010 bikini-clad women made history at Bondi yesterday, where they set a world record with the largest swimsuit photo shoot ever.

The shoot will appear in the January issue of Cosmopolitan, on sale on December 3, and will also feature in the next edition of the World Records book published by the World Records Academy, out in March next year.

"We're blown away by the response we've had to the Cosmopolitan and Venus Breeze Biggest Ever Swimwear Shoot," said Cosmo editor Sarah Wilson, the bikini brain.

“I wanted to do something that got women in an environment when they were around each others bodies and could feel comfortable,” Ms Wilson said yesterday.

A total of 1,010 women smashed the previous record of 300.

Best described as Baywatch meets Beach Blanket Bingo, the scene on the sand yesterday included 15 roving lifesavers recruited to apply sunscreen to 1,000 bikini babes who were ogled by countless surfers, locals and tourists who must have been surprised by the popularity of a mid-morning weekday dip.

Bondi lifeguards turned their ocean-front headquarters into a dressing room to allow each women to change into her bikini.

The skimpy swimwear made its debut in 1946. Hoping it would be worn by beautiful "bombshells", the designers named it after Bikini Atoll, an atomic bomb test site in the Marshall Islands.

The bikini shoot will be featured in a double gatefold insert in the January issue of Cosmopolitan.

The event was organised as a promotion between Cosmopolitan Magazine and Gillette. A blend of 100 paid models and many more volunteers — mostly more interested in the free $120 goody bag than the notion of creating history — gathered in the sun.

With 23C temperatures and blue skies, the event kicked off Sydney's beach season in grand style.

worlds oldest man in Japan Celebrates its 112th Birthday

18th September - One hundred and twelve candles on the cake for the world's oldest man, who earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records back in June 2006. Tomoji Tanabe was born Sept. 18, 1895, and was named the world's oldest male after the death of a Puerto Rican man in January at the age of 115.

Tomoji Tanabe, a Japanese man born on 18 September 1895, has celebrated his record birthday at home in Miyakonojo, on the island of Kyushu, 900 kilometres south-west of the capital.

The town's Mayor paid his respects with a bunch of flowers and a cheque for 850 yen, equal to around 650 euro. And of course, the question about the secret of a long life.

Drink milk, steer clear of alcohol and eat healthily: lots of greens and a breakfast of rice soup, miso (fermented soya) and algae. Tanabe claims that he has never stopped keeping his diary, reading every daily paper of the day and going for a walk alone.

"He is in really good health", doctors assure us. "I want to live for ever, I do not want to die", he told journalists. It is a target that more and more Japanese are attaining: according to statistics, there are over 32,000 hundred-year-olds.

The women of the rising sun have held the world record in longevity for the past twenty-two years, with the men second only to Icelanders. However, with life-expectancies growing and birth-rates falling, Japan risks a demographic crisis, warn experts.

World Tallest Man Wedding

The world's tallest man, Bao Xishun, who stands 2.36 metres (7 feet 8 inches), as his bride is unveiled at their public wedding ceremony at the tomb of Kublai Khan on the outskirts of Erdos, in China's northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Thursday, July 12, 2007. Bao married 1.68-meter-tall Xia Shujuan, who is half the groom's age at 28, after conducting a worldwide search for a bride. Xia is from Bao's hometown of Chifeng in northern China.

The world's tallest man married a woman who's two-thirds his height and half his age, holding a traditional Mongolian ceremony Thursday with great fanfare at the tomb of Kublai Khan.

Bao Xishun, a 7-foot-9 herdsman from Inner Mongolia, met his bride earlier this year after searching high and low, sending advertisements around the world. It turns out he didn't have to look far , 5-foot-6 saleswoman Xia Shujian hails from his hometown of Chifeng.

Bao wore a specially designed light blue gown topped with a gold vest, and rode to his bride's camp in front of the tomb in a cart pulled by two camels, AP Television News reported. A limo followed the cart.

In keeping with Mongolian tradition, the bride's attendants tried to "stop" Bao from getting into the camp. But they relented after the giant groom's sincere appeals, and he was offered tea by the bride's relatives, symbolizing that he had been accepted into her family.

He did not kowtow to his parents and in-laws because of his extraordinary height and arthritis in his knees, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Bao, 56, and Xia, 28, married in a civil ceremony in March. This time, more than 2,000 people turned out for the ceremonial nuptials, including relatives, locals and a large crowd of journalists.
Bao was confirmed last year by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest person. Xinhua said his growth was normal until age 16, when a growth spurt shot him up to his current height within seven years.

He was in the news in December after he used his long arms to save two dolphins by pulling plastic out of their stomachs.

The dolphins got sick after nibbling on plastic from the edge of their pool at an aquarium in Liaoning province. Attempts to use surgical instruments to remove the plastic failed because the dolphins' stomachs contracted in response to the instruments, Chinese media reported.
