Amazing facts and figures of Grand Prix Silverstone

THE three days of the Grand Prix event at Silverstone generate some interesting facts and statistics.

The 20,000 bottles of mineral water consumed during the Grand Prix would fill up 150 spa pools.

The G-Force of 3.5 experienced by Formula 1 drivers is the same as that encountered by astronauts during take-off.

2,800 bottles of champagne will be drunk over the three days.

A team of 100 medical staff, including 40 doctors, will be on site to deal with any medical problems among the competitors and visitors.

There will be more than 600 highly-trained volunteer track side marshals on duty around the track. This includes 290 fire and course marshals, 75 flag marshals, 50 observers and 30 incident officers.

If Lewis Hamilton takes the chequered flag at the Grand Prix he will become the first British driver to win his home Grand Prix in his debut season.

15,000 litres of paint will be used in

preparation for Silverstone's biggest event of the year, which is enough to cover 30 Boeing 747s.

1,796 catering staff will work at the Grand Prix including 98 chefs, 842 hospitality staff and 757 mobile catering staff.

The Grand Prix generates approximately £65 million annually for the local economy.

Formula 1 drivers will lose an average of 4kg in weight during the British Grand Prix.

Since 1950 the British Grand Prix at Silverstone has been won 15 times by a British driver.
480 loud speakers are used at the three-day event.

The average speed of a Formula 1 car around Silverstone is 135mph.

The track is 3.194 miles long and 15m wide. Drivers will complete 60 laps during the British Grand Prix, which is 191.64 miles in total.

Condom Fashion Show for AIDS Awareness

Condoms of all shapes and sizes were on display at a Beijing fashion show yesterday featuring dresses, hats and even lollipops made of the said item. Models fought through extravagant soap bubble special effects to show off tight-fitting wedding gowns, scaly-looking evening dresses, outrageous bikinis and other garments made entirely of condoms, inflated or otherwise.

The show was held at the Fourth China Reproductive Health New Technologies and Products Expo and organized by China's largest condom manufacturer, Guilin Latex Factory, to promote the use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

It also marked World Population Day, organized annually by the UN Population Fund.

China, with a population now of 1.3 billion, introduced a strict one-child policy in the late 1970s under which many residents are restricted to one child.

"One (child) is not enough -- two are better," said visitor Song Weiliang.

But the main aim of the condom show was to promote AIDS awareness.

China originally stigmatized AIDS as a disease of the decadent, capitalist West -- a problem of gays, sex workers and drug users. Traditionally, none of these officially existed in communist China.

It has belatedly woken up to the problem, and health experts have warned the virus is now moving into the general population. But a lack of sex education and unwillingness to talk about sex still hampers the fight, health experts say.

World Tallest Man Wedding

The world's tallest man, Bao Xishun, who stands 2.36 metres (7 feet 8 inches), as his bride is unveiled at their public wedding ceremony at the tomb of Kublai Khan on the outskirts of Erdos, in China's northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Thursday, July 12, 2007. Bao married 1.68-meter-tall Xia Shujuan, who is half the groom's age at 28, after conducting a worldwide search for a bride. Xia is from Bao's hometown of Chifeng in northern China.

The world's tallest man married a woman who's two-thirds his height and half his age, holding a traditional Mongolian ceremony Thursday with great fanfare at the tomb of Kublai Khan.

Bao Xishun, a 7-foot-9 herdsman from Inner Mongolia, met his bride earlier this year after searching high and low, sending advertisements around the world. It turns out he didn't have to look far , 5-foot-6 saleswoman Xia Shujian hails from his hometown of Chifeng.

Bao wore a specially designed light blue gown topped with a gold vest, and rode to his bride's camp in front of the tomb in a cart pulled by two camels, AP Television News reported. A limo followed the cart.

In keeping with Mongolian tradition, the bride's attendants tried to "stop" Bao from getting into the camp. But they relented after the giant groom's sincere appeals, and he was offered tea by the bride's relatives, symbolizing that he had been accepted into her family.

He did not kowtow to his parents and in-laws because of his extraordinary height and arthritis in his knees, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Bao, 56, and Xia, 28, married in a civil ceremony in March. This time, more than 2,000 people turned out for the ceremonial nuptials, including relatives, locals and a large crowd of journalists.
Bao was confirmed last year by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest person. Xinhua said his growth was normal until age 16, when a growth spurt shot him up to his current height within seven years.

He was in the news in December after he used his long arms to save two dolphins by pulling plastic out of their stomachs.

The dolphins got sick after nibbling on plastic from the edge of their pool at an aquarium in Liaoning province. Attempts to use surgical instruments to remove the plastic failed because the dolphins' stomachs contracted in response to the instruments, Chinese media reported.

New 7 Wonders - Taj Mahal on Top

Lady Liberty was left behind. But the Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal and three architectural marvels from Latin America are among the new seven wonders of the world, according to a global poll released yesterday.

Jordan's Petra is the seventh winner, and Peru's Machu Picchu, Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid also made the cut.

About 100 million votes were cast on the Internet and through cell phone text messages, said New7Wonders, the nonprofit group that conducted the poll.

A Peruvian in national costume held Machu Picchu's award to the sky and bowed to the crowd, eliciting one of the biggest cheers yesterday from the audience of 50,000 at a soccer stadium in Portugal's capital, Lisbon. Many jeered when the Statue of Liberty was announced as a candidate. Portugal opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Other nominees that lost were the Eiffel Tower, Easter Island in the Pacific, the Acropolis and the Sydney Opera House.

The pyramids of Giza, of which The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the only surviving structure from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, were assured of honorary status in addition to the new seven after Egyptian officials said it was a disgrace they had to compete.
The campaign was launched in 1999 by the Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber.

Almost 200 nominations came in, and the list was narrowed to the 21 most-voted by the start of last year.

Also among losing candidates were Cambodia's Angkor, Spain's Alhambra, Turkey's Hagia Sophia, Japan's Kiyomizu Temple, Russia's Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, Britain's Stonehenge, Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle and Mali's Timbuktu.

Weber's foundation says it aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments.

The traditional seven wonders were concentrated in the Mediterranean and Middle East and were culled from lists compiled by ancient Greeks. The Pyramids remain, but the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria have all vanished.

Jay Cochrane renowned high wire walker again on Niagara Falls

Visitors to Niagara Falls can now do more than just look down on the world famous waterfalls.
They can look up. That's because Jay Cochrane, a renowned high wire walker, is bringing his act to Niagara Falls, Canada beginning today. Cochrane, 63, will perform twice a day - some 20 stories in the air - walking between two specially designed towers located near the Skylon Tower.

The towers are 1,000 feet apart and Cochrane said he expects it will take between 20 minutes and 30 minutes to complete each walk, depending on weather conditions.

Cochrane's act, which is free and used as a promotion to attract more tourists to Niagara Falls, will take place at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily through Sept. 3, weather permitting.

He was supposed to start last weekend as part of the city's Canada Day celebration, but windy conditions postponed Cochrane's debut until today.

Cochrane will meet visitors after each walk at Skylon Tower.

In the late 1800s, Niagara Falls attracted many tight-rope walkers and crowds numbering in the tens of thousands. Unlike Cochrane, these 19th century daredevils balanced themselves and performed tricks on a high wire strung from one side of the gorge to the other. The most famous was a French aerialist who called himself "The Great Blondin." High-wire acts over the river were eventually outlawed as too dangerous.

World 07-07-07 Mania - Are Your Lucky Number 7?

With apologies to Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry, this Saturday you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?"

Lots of people do, for one simple reason. Saturday will be July 7, 2007, or 7-7-07. In numerological terms, that's about as big as it gets for the superstitious.

People are booking gambling junkets, casinos are offering "7"-themed promotions, and about three times the normal number of couples plan to get married that day, including Eva Longoria and basketball player boyfriend Tony Parker.

Nearly 100 couples will tie the knot atop roller coasters or inside revolving teacups at amusement parks at 7 that morning, a California yogi plans to achieve massive harmony through gong meditation at 7 that night, and Christians will gather in a Tennessee football stadium to pray on a day that has good Biblical implications for many.

Experts are quick to point out that Saturday is no more or less likely to be lucky than any other day. But try telling that to Allen Windrim, a 20-something entrepreneur from Philadelphia who owns a real estate management firm, a collection agency and a construction company.

"Hopefully I can get all my vacancies filled that day, all my collection cases settled without going to court, and get seven jobs for the construction company worth seventy-thousand each," he said.

"And then I'll take all that money and put it on Number Seven," he said. "I'm definitely in Atlantic City that day."

Casinos across the country are rolling heavy doses of sevens to attract superstitious gamblers, everything from $7 drink specials to luxury watches selling for $777. The Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City is offering a $7,777 package that includes a bi-level suite, two tickets to a show and the spa, and dining and shopping credits.

Craps players — among the most superstitious gamblers — have been buzzing for weeks about Lucky 7 Day, said Mario DiGuiseppe, the Tropicana's vice president of casino operations.
Asked if he believes in luck or superstition, DiGuiseppe responded with the certainty of one who knows that the odds always favor the house.

"I believe in math," he said with a chuckle.

Math is no obstacle for William Mobley of Philadelphia, who plans to be in Atlantic City on Saturday.

"I got a feeling about that day," he said. "I'll win over $700. Everything will go people's way that day. At least hopefully mine."

Gambles of a different sort will take couples down the aisle. Kathleen Murray, deputy editor of The Knot — http://www.theknot.com/ — said 38,000 of the company's members are getting married that day, up from the normal 12,000 for a Saturday in July.

"This is a true phenomenon," she said. "I've never seen anything like this before. Seven has always been considered the luckiest number, and with three sevens in a row brides and grooms feel they're hitting the jackpot that day."

One of them is Jennifer Dybas, 27, of Channahom, Ill., whose fiancee, Jeff Michalek, 34, is a fanatical poker player. Their wedding theme: Lucky In Love.

"We're giving out instant lottery tickets as favors, and we have little chocolate poker chips with `777 — Lucky In Love' written on them," she said. "Our cake has dice on top and a roulette wheel on the bottom, and the king and queen of hearts on it."

"We got the last ballroom at the country club, the last DJ available at the place we went to, and the last photographer at the photo studio we wanted," she said. "So the luck is starting already."
Other brides chose the day for a more practical reason. "Some brides say their husbands will have no excuse to ever forget their anniversary this way," Murray said.

The Six Flags amusement park chain is hosting seven wedding receptions at 7 a.m. at each of its 12 U.S. facilities. They're calling the event "Thrilled Ever After."

The Ritz Carlton Hotel's Central Park location in New York is offering a July 7 wedding package with a reception for 77, a seven-tier wedding cake, seven Tiffany diamonds for the bride, and a seven-night honeymoon at any Ritz in the world for $77,777.

The day has big noncommercial potential as well. Harijiwan, a yoga instructor in Santa Monica, Calif., who uses only one name, plans a gong meditation course at 7 p.m.

"The numerology on this day — 7-7-07 — is phenomenal," he wrote on his Web site. "Seven represents the aura. Three sevens equals 21 (2+13). Three represents the positive mind. Add the 7 p.m. hour and you have four sevens, which equals 28 (2+810). Ten is the radiant body."
Christians will gather in the Nashville football stadium where the Tennessee Titans play to pray and fast on the 7th.

"The number is significant in the Bible because seven represents a covenant," said Julia Richardson, a spokeswoman for the event, titled The Call. "We feel we want to make a covenant with the Lord to pursue him. Whether it's 1,000 people or 100,000 people, we feel we can bring about a change through prayer and fasting."

Not everyone is greeting the date with enthusiasm. July 7 is the second anniversary of the London terrorist bombings that killed 52 people, and Great Britain has been at high states of readiness since an attack on the Glasgow airport and foiled car bombings at Picadilly Circus within the last week.

Longest Wimbledon Final Set Record

Brazil's Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa entered the Wimbledon record books on Wednesday when they won the longest final set in championship history.

The Brazilian pair upset sixth seeds Paul Hanley of Australia and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe, winning 5-7 7-6 4-6 7-6 28-26 in a rain-interrupted encounter that spanned an unprecedented four days of play.

Although an opening doubles set in the 1968 championships took 62 games to complete, the 54 played on Court 16 is the most for a deciding set.

The total of 102 games played was also the most in a single match since tiebreaks were introduced in 1973.

The match began on Saturday. It ended after five hours and 58 minutes play and was 11 minutes shy of the longest match in Wimbledon history when Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor beat Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry in the last year's doubles quarter-final.

Amazing Eaten Record - 66 Hotdogs in 12 minutes

An American competitive eater devoured a record 66 hotdogs in 12 minutes on Wednesday to win the July 4 annual Coney Island hotdog eating competition, defeating a six-time champion from Japan in a photo finish.

Defending champion Takeru Kobayashi, a 28-year-old from Japan who weighed in at 170 pounds, went into the competition with a jaw injury but still managed to down 63 hotdogs.
But the winner of the "Mustard Belt" prize for the most hotdogs eaten was 23-year-old Joey Chestnut from San Jose, California, who weighed in at 225 pounds.

Chestnut fulfilled his vow to beat the world record he set in qualifying earlier this year of 59 1/2 dogs, and to bring back the prize to America on Independence Day.

The two were neck and neck in the final minute until Kobayashi appeared to suffer what the commentator on sports TV channel ESPN euphemistically called a "reversal."

Judges reviewed the debris of plates and scraps and declared Chestnut the winner with 66. The third place eater trailed way behind with 49.

"For the past six years Kobayashi has dominated. In year seven he just couldn't cut it," Chestnut told Reuters. "It just feels awesome. For a long time the belt has been going away to Japan but this year it's staying here."

Competitive eating is a popular pastime in America, particularly at holidays.

The hotdog eating event is the highlight of July 4 Independence Day celebrations at Coney Island beach in New York. Eaters tend to dunk the bread in water to make swallowing easier and eschew condiments such as ketchup or mustard.

Kobayashi, who was competing despite a jaw injury, said all the eaters were getting better every year. "I lost but this was the most fun I had," he said.

"I didn't feel pain but my jaw wasn't moving part way through," he said of his injury.
Police said as many as 50,000 spectators watched the event, which drew 17 competitors, including two women.

The United States has the highest prevalence of obesity among developed countries, at about one-third of the adult population, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 60 million adults are obese.
