American Idol winner Jordin Sparks honor from Queen Elizabeth II

Sparks is crowned new American Idol winner

The big voice overwhelmed the beatbox Wednesday night as Jordin Sparks was crowned the newest and youngest “American Idol.”

Sparks, 17, of Glendale, Ariz., prevailed over Blake Lewis, 25, of Bothell, Wash., after a triumphant performance Tuesday that wowed the show's judges and viewers who gave her a majority of the record 74 million votes cast.

“Mom, Dad, I love you,” Sparks, the daughter of retired NFL player Phillippi Sparks, said tearfully after a bear hug from Lewis.

The contest came down to either the stronger singer, Sparks, or the better entertainer, Lewis. Sparks delivered her songs simply and powerfully; Lewis' flourishes included his sound-effects beatboxing and sharp dance moves.

The finale pulled out the stops and the stars, with Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Green Day and more performing. The two-hour show opened with Lewis and Sparks dueting on the Beatles “I Saw Her Standing There,” followed quickly by a touring Stefani singing 𔄜 in the Morning” via satellite from Massachusetts.

Midler took the stage as the show came toward its close, singing “The Wind Beneath My Wings.”
Auburn native DelPiano back as Baldwin's agent In an about-face, Alec Baldwin has returned to CAA and agent, Auburn native, Matt DelPiano.

Citing personal reasons, Baldwin had left the agency late last month. The abrupt exit came as he was dealing with the blowback from a Web site leak of a four-minute voicemail tirade he left for his daughter after she missed a scheduled phone conversation. It was the latest chapter in his contentious divorce with actress Kim Basinger, who is also represented by the same agency - a situation that may have exacerbated his ire.

Baldwin, who briefly said that he didn't want to return to his series Rock” and would instead devote himself to raising awareness of parental alienation during divorces and the inequities that fathers receive from the courts, is quietly getting things back in order, as his return to CAA indicates.

Through a spokesman, Baldwin said, “I could not imagine being represented by anyone other than Matt DelPiano.”

Latest Rumor or Truth in Florida USA

Three women in North Florida turned up at hospitals over a 5-day period, all with the same symptoms. Fever, chills, and vomiting, followed by muscular collapse, paralysis and finally, death.

There were no outward signs of trauma.

Autopsy results showed toxicity in the blood. These women did not know each other and seemed to have nothing in common. It was discovered, however, that they had all visited the same Restaurant (Olive Garden) within days of their deaths. The Health Department descended on the restaurant , shutting it down. The food, water, and air conditioning were all inspected and tested, to no avail.

The big break came when a waitress at the restaurant was rushed to the hospital with similar symptoms. She told doctors that she had been on vacation, and had only went to the restaurant to pick up her check.

She did not eat or drink while she was there, but had used the restroom.

That is when one toxicologist, remembering an article he had read, drove out to the restaurant, went into the restroom and lifted the toilet seat .

Under the seat, out of normal view , was a small spider. The spider was captured and brought back to the lab, where it was determined to be the Two-Striped Telamonia (Telamonia dimidiata), so named because of its reddened flesh color. This spider's venom is extremely toxic, but can take several days to take effect. They live in cold, dark, damp climates, and toilet rims provide just the right atmosphere.

Several days later a lawyer from Jacksonville showed up at a hospital emergency room. Before his death, he told the doctor, that he had been away on business, had taken a flight from Indonesia , changing planes in Singapore , before returning home. He did NOT visit (Olive Garden), while there. He did (as did all of the other victims) have what was determined to be a puncture wound, on his right buttock. Investigators discovered that the flight he was on had originated in India .

The Civilian Aeronautics Board (CAB) ordered an immediate inspection of the toilets of all flights from India and discovered the Two-Striped Telamonia (Telamonia dimidiata) spider's nests on 4 different planes!

It is now believed that these spiders can be anywhere in the world . So please, before you use a public toilet, lift the seat to check for spiders. It can save your life!

Brazilian striker Romario claims 1000th goal

Veteran Brazilian striker Romario claimed the 1,000th goal of his career late on Sunday playing for Vasco da Gama against Recife Sport in a league game.

The 41-year-old, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, moved into four figures by converting a 41st minute penalty which helped his side to a 3-1 win. According to the player’s own calculations and that of Vasco da Gama, he reached the 1,000 goal mark after playing in 1,254 games that took him to PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Flamengo before joining Vasca da Gama. He scored 56 times for the Brazilian national side.

The goal-scoring statistics, including youth games and testimonials, however, have not been ratified by world governing body Fifa.

Dog nurses Tiger triplets at China zoo

In this photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, a dog feeds tiger triplets and her own puppy, right, at the Paomaling Zoo in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong Province, Wednesday, May 16, 2007. The tiger triplets were rejected by their mother shortly after their birth. (AP Photo/Xinhua, Lu Chuanquan)
It's a dog's life for three newborn tiger triplets in eastern China. The cubs, whom officials at the Jinan Paomaling Wild Animal World in Shandong province are so far just calling "One," "Two" and "Three," have been nursed by a dog since they were rejected by their tiger mother shortly after birth, said Paomaling manager Chen Yucai.

The trio's adoptive mother, a mixed breed farm dog called "Huani," is expected to nurse them for about a month or until their appetites outpace her supply, Chen said.
Chen said it is common for Chinese zoos to use surrogate dog mothers to nurse rejected tiger cubs and that Huani has nursed tigers before.

In the past, Paomaling put dog urine on their rejected cub's fur to make the surrogate think she was nursing one of her own puppies but the zoo didn't bother with Huani because she seemed not to mind nursing the tigers, he said.

"The family is getting along well and seems to enjoy each other," Chen said.

People comes into your life for a Reason

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.!

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.

Send this to every friend that you have, including the person who sent it to you.

1 Replies - you may need to work on your "people skills"
2 Replies - you are nice but probably need to be more outgoing
4 Replies - you have picked your friends well
6 Replies - you are downright popular
8 Replies or More - you are totally awesome (and that's probably why you're on MY list)

Mercedes-Benz Bionic Fish Shaped Car Launched

DaimlerChrysler on Tuesday unveiled a diesel concept car that gets more than 70 miles per gallon, reduces some pollutants by 80 percent, seats four and looks like something that popped out of a Caribbean reef — only magnified.

The company attributed the high mileage and lower emissions to new technology and an aerodynamic design based on the biology of a boxfish.

The fully functional car was on display at a company technology exhibit in Washington, D.C. DaimlerChrysler said it had no plans to mass produce the vehicle, but that some of the technology would show up in future vehicles.

In a statement, DaimlerChrysler said its engineers "for the first time looked for a specific example in nature which not only approximates to the idea of an aerodynamic, safe, comfortable and environmentally compatible car in terms of details, but as a formal and structural whole."
Stronger, lighter frameWith the help of biologists, the engineers settled on the boxfish, a cube-shaped, tropical fish whose anatomical structure was used to design a vehicle body with a wind drag coefficient of just 0.06 in the wind tunnel.

The boxfish, the company said, "is also a prime example of rigidity and light weight. Its skin consists of numerous hexagonal, bony plates which provide maximum strength with minimal weight and effectively protect the animal from injury."

DaimlerChrysler researchers used those principles to design external door panels that are 40 percent more rigid than conventional designs. Designing an entire body around those principles, DaimlerChrysler said, would reduce total weight by one third "with undiminished strength and crash safety."

84 mpg on highwayThe low drag and lightweight components are key reasons for the fact that the 140 horsepower concept car gets 20 percent better mileage than other diesels of its size, DaimlerChrysler said.

The vehicle also uses a new diesel filter technology that reduces smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 80 percent, the company said. A mixture based on animal urine is sprayed into the exhaust system, neutralizing the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water.
European automakers have long touted diesel engines, which get 30 percent better fuel economy and emit 20 percent less carbon dioxide than comparable gasoline engines.

But diesel's biggest hurdles in the United States have been the smog-forming nitrogen oxides and the perception that diesel engines are noisy and smoky.

Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler have been trying to reintroduce diesels to Americans, showcasing engines that are much quieter and less polluting than predecessors.
A diesel-powered Jeep Liberty is available as is the Mercedes E 320 CDI diesel sedan. Volkswagen sells Beetle, Golf and Jetta diesel models.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s Daughter Yolanda King Dies at 51

Yolanda King, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s eldest child who pursued her father's dream of racial harmony through drama and motivational speaking, collapsed and died. She was 51.
King died late Tuesday in Santa Monica, California, said Steve Klein, a spokesman for the King Center. The family did not know the cause of death, but relatives think it might have been a heart problem, he said.

"She was an actress, author, producer, advocate for peace and nonviolence, who was known and loved for her motivational and inspirational contributions to society," the King family said in a statement.

Former Mayor Andrew Young, a lieutenant of her father's who has remained close to the family, said King was going to her brother Dexter's home when she collapsed in the doorway.

Her death came less than a year and a half after her mother, Coretta Scott King, died in January 2006 after battling ovarian cancer and the effects of a stroke. Her struggle prompted her daughter to work with the American Heart Association to raise awareness about strokes, especially among blacks.

Yolanda King, who lived in California, was an actress, ran a production company and appeared in numerous films, including "Ghosts of Mississippi." She played Rosa Parks in the 1978 miniseries "King."

"Yolanda was lovely. She wore the mantle of princess, and she wore it with dignity and charm," said the Rev. Joseph Lowery, one of her father's close aides in the civil rights movement. He added she was "thoroughly committed to the movement and found her own means of expressing that commitment through drama."

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who also worked with her father, said: "She lived with a lot of the trauma of our struggle. The movement was in her DNA." The Rev. Al Sharpton called her a "torch bearer for her parents and a committed activist in her own right."

White House press secretary Tony Snow said President Bush and the first lady were sad to learn of King's death, adding, "Our thoughts are with the King family today."

Yolanda King founded and led Higher Ground Productions, billed as a "gateway for inner peace, unity and global transformation." On her company's Web site, she described her mission as encouraging personal growth and positive social change.

The flag at The King Center, where she was a board member, flew at half-staff on Wednesday.
Yolanda Denise King -- nicknamed Yoki by the family -- was born November 17, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, where her father was then preaching. Her brother Martin III was born in 1957; brother Dexter in 1961; and sister Bernice in 1963.

She was just two weeks old when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus there, leading to the Montgomery bus boycott spearheaded by her father.

When she was 10 weeks old, the King family home was bombed in Jan. 30, 1956, as her father attended a boycott rally. Neither she nor her mother was injured when the device exploded on the front porch.

In 1963, when she was 7, her father mentioned her and her siblings at the March on Washington, saying: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
She was 12 when her father was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968.

King was a 1976 graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she majored in theater and Afro-American studies. She also earned a master's degree in theater from New York University.

Yolanda King was the most visible of the four children during this year's Martin Luther King Day in January, the first since her mother's death.

When asked by The Associated Press at that event how she was dealing with the loss of her mother, she responded: "I connected with her spirit so strongly. I am in direct contact with her spirit, and that has given me so much peace and so much strength."

At her father's Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, she performed a series of solo skits that told stories including a girl's first ride on a desegregated bus and a college student's recollection of the 1963 campaign to desegregate Birmingham, Ala.

She also urged the audience to be a force for peace and love, and to use the King holiday each year to ask tough questions about their own beliefs about prejudice.

"We must keep reaching across the table and, in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, feed each other," she said.

Funeral arrangements would be announced later, the family said in a brief statement.

Upcoming Corporate Wedding Industry Happenings in India

Indian weddings, long renowned for their penchant for lavish spending, are attracting corporates across a clutch of industries, transforming the wedding services industry into a more organised business.

Firms are making substantial investments in the segment to offer services spanning the entire gamut of the matrimonial business from matchmaking and entertainment to insurance.
"It is one time no one minds spending," says Manjunath Jyothinagar, president, business development, Gitanjali group, which is investing 1 billion rupees over the next three years in wedding-theme malls and luxury retail.

He expects family spends of 1-2 million rupees each on jewellery and designer brands at these malls, where group firm Gitanjali Gems Ltd. will house its retail jewellery.

"If you want to be in the jewellery business, you are catering for weddings," said V. Govindraj, vice-president, retail and marketing, Tanishq, pegging about 40-60 percent of India's jewellery revenues to weddings and festivals.

Tanishq is owned by Titan Industries Ltd., which derived more than half its revenue from jewellery sales in FY07.

Real-estate developer Omaxe Ltd., which has filed initial listing documents with the market regulator, is building three wedding malls slated for completion by end-2007.
Non-traditional businesses also see an opportunity here.

People Interactive (I) Pvt. Ltd. offers match-making services through its portal shaadi.com and its 'ShaadiPoint' retail chain is expanding to 400 outlets from 150 in the next 18 months.
"It's a very large industry, easily upwards of $10 million if not more, and 99.9 percent of it is unorganised," says Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Mittal.

Catering to this demand are also other matchmaking websites like jeevansathi, promoted by Info Edge (India) Ltd., and bharatmatrimony.com.

Insurance provider Bajaj Allianz General Insurance has introduced wedding policies to cover losses due to postponements or cancellations due to fire or other accidents.

"The need is there, but people don't look at it because the awareness is not there and for superstitious reasons," a company spokesman said. "It's a niche product." While few policies have been sold, the firm is sure it would grow, he added.

Ghai Enterprises, which operates banquet hall chain Mayfair Celebrations, reported 70 million rupees in revenue from banqueting services for weddings alone in FY07.

Weddings bring in 65 percent of its banqueting revenues, said Srinidhi Rao, chief operating officer, Ghai Enterprises, adding it plans to have nine halls from three now by end-2007.

WEDDING WHIMS
The clientele is now more demanding with requests that range from champagne bars and theme weddings to exotic cuisines and entertainers from around the world.

"People are not concerned about discount, but they are about value," says Thomas Abraham, resident manager of luxury hotel Leela Kempinski Mumbai, owned by Hotel Leelaventure Ltd. "It is a consumer's market."

Larger firms also act as 'in-betweens' for the smaller players, said Rao of Ghai Enterprises. "Service providers are more flexible now. They say yes to everything--there are more options available, more competition and more awareness."

World's fastest train on display in Paris

A French high-speed train code-named V150, which broke the world speed record on rail last April by reaching 574.8 km an hour, toured Paris on a barge to the delight of Parisians and tourists. After a cruise on the Seine River, the barge will moor near the Eiffel Tower where tourists and Parisians will have the chance to see the interior of the V150.An exhibition recounting the history of the French TGVs will also be open to visitors until May 20.

A French high-speed train broke the world speed record on rail on Tuesday, reaching 357 miles an hour (574.8 kilometers) in a much publicized test in eastern France, exceeding expectations that it would hit 150 meters a second, or 540 kilometers an hour.

The train, code-named V150, is a research prototype meant to demonstrate the superiority both of the TGV high-speed train and of its probable successor, the AGV, which is also manufactured by the French engineering group Alstom. The performance on Tuesday came close to but did not break the world speed record for any train, set by an electromagnetic train in 2003.

The French railroad company SNCF and Alstom publicized the event as a test of “French excellence,” building on national pride for the 25-year-old bullet train.

The train reached its maximum speed in about 16 minutes at a site about 125 miles from Paris on a specially chosen sector of tracks of the new Eastern Europe TGV line, which will begin service between Paris and Strasbourg in June. The V150 train, with a reduced number of train cars and larger wheels, incorporates technological elements from the AGV.

SNCF and Alstom insist that the demonstration does not fulfill any immediate commercial purposes, but others say the speed could serve as a selling point in Asia and other markets.
“This world speed record is intended for research, to improve security and performance,” said Anne-Marie Idrac, the head of SNCF upon leaving the train. “And today the train that runs the fastest is the Eastern TGV. We don’t see the market today for such high speed.”

Alstom, the world high-speed train leader, with 21 percent of the market, is hoping it might parlay the record into sales, as its competitors — Siemens of Germany and
Hitachi of Japan — have cut into Alstom’s lead in the competition for the market.

But Alstom has 70 percent of the market for trains that reach 270 kilometers (168 miles) an hour or more, Patrick Kron, Alstom’s chief executive, said in an interview.

“There are big developments to come in Europe, but also Latin America where we just announced we are competing for an order in Argentina,” Mr. Kron said.

High-speed trains are a potentially lucrative market in developing countries — China and India are the biggest markets, with China spending about 15 billion euros a year on its rail network, while India is looking at developing a high-speed train system.

Crowds gathered on bridges overlooking the rail tracks to watch the train race by, and national television broadcast live images from the train.

“It’s quite an achievement; I hope it’s going to help us sell a lot of TGV’s,” said Arnaud Delahaye, a 32-year-old technician from nearby Reims as he watched the V150 train from behind fences after its arrival at a purpose-built control center.

The Maglev from Japan holds the world record for a train with a speed of 581 kilometers (361 miles) an hour recorded in 2003; it uses electromagnetic technology, where the train does not actually touch the rail. This technology is more costly, typically runs shorter distances and is less compatible with existing rail networks.

High-speed trains have not caught on in the United States as they have in Europe, where TGV travel is generally considered faster transportation than air travel for distances that the TGV can cover in less than three hours.

France operates 400 TGV trains on about 1,100 miles of track built especially for high speeds.

Worlds Longest Saree in Guinness Book of World Records 2007

A leading garment firm here has claimed to have woven the world's longest saree in a non-stop 18-day effort.

The 2,007 feet saree was made recently for adorning the presiding deity of Parshwa Padmavathi Jain Temple in Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu, P R Kumar, managing partner of city-based Kumaran Silks, said.

The 'kumkum' (maroon) coloured saree, handed over free of cost to the temple authorities, has already been draped around the deity.

The Guinness Book of World Records has registered it under the tag 'the Longest Saree, offered to Goddess Padmavathi', he said.

Kumar said it was an onerous task taking up the work considering the challenges that lay ahead.

"We thought about for a while before taking up the order but later took it as a prestige issue and decided to go ahead," he said.

"First of all, members of the Jain community are not supposed to use silk but to give the rich look of silk, we went in for Silkon, a thread closely resembling silk, which is rarely used in weaving sarees," he said.

Kumar said his firm was given a deadline of 21 days to deliver the saree but it was completed in A leading garment firm here has claimed to have woven the world's longest saree in a non-stop 18-day effort.

Three experts were employed and the machine was made to run 24 hours a day, with each of them working in eight hour shifts, Kumar said.

"Even a power fluctuation would result in the thread giving away which means we have to set things again and start all over," Kumar said.

"Lest a power failure should destroy the entire process, we decided to run the machines with the help of generators," he added.

The packaging of the product was important and it was literally 'on a roll' since it started taking shape. "The only way to keep it going was to keep it rolled," he said.

Kumar said he did not wish to reveal how much money was spent on the saree.
He has no qualms that the Guinness record was credited to the temple authorities.
"They perceived the idea, we only produced it," he said with a smile.

"It was a test to our capability and we did not want to sell it for a price since it was meant for a deity," he added.

Weaving long sarees of late has become a prestige issue among leading textile firms in South India. Last year Kochi-based 'Seematti' had come out with a 1,585 ft saree. In 2005, 'Pothys', another firm in Chennai, had woven a 1,276 ft saree.
