Blue Diamond Sells World Record

Rare blue diamond sells for record $9.5 million. A perfect bright blue diamond weighing 7.03 carats sold Tuesday for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs, the highest price remunerated per carat for any jewel at auction. The earlier record price for a fancy vivid blue diamond was $7.9 million, counting commission, for a stone weighing 6.04 carats at sale in Hong Kong in October 2007

The rectangular fashioned blue stone, the rarest to go into the global market this year, went to an unidentified purchaser bidding. The final price includes a commission paid by the buyer to the auction house. The stone sets a record price per carat for any gemstone sold at auction of $1,349,752. It was the showpiece of its semi-annual sale in Geneva. This is already a new world record price for a fancy vivid blue diamond and a new world record per carat for any jewel.

It was put up for sale by London-listed Petra Diamonds, which extracted it last year from the historic Cullinan mine in South Africa, the world's most regular supplier of blue diamonds of size and quality. Blue are the rarest of the diamond family after reds. The new owner will have the right to name the stone, which is mounted in a platinum ring. The pre-sale catalog estimate was 6.8 million to 10 million francs, excluding commission. The hammer price excluding commission was 9.3 million francs.

The sale fetched a total of 39.5 million Swiss francs ($35.7 million) for 266 lots which found new owners, while another 80 pieces were stranded on the block. Fresh stones to the market, including coloured diamonds, fetched good prices, the Briton said.

Car driving world record for motivation

Solar-powered car driving for bigger world record set in Alaska, somebody called police concerning an unidentified flying object on the road. Motorists rotate around to snap pictures. The Power of One, a solar-powered car that has been mountaineering across North America on three wheels, stopped Tuesday at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Da Luz drives on his back; toes pointed ahead, his mug out from end to end the window of a hump on the top. He steers with handlebars that look like they belong on a motorcycle. The car has no rearview mirror. Instead, a camera behind him transmits to a tiny screen mounted on his sunglasses. It hasn't been an easy journey. Gloomy skies trapped him for a month in Vancouver. Last month, in New Orleans, thieves broke into the support van following him.

Creator and driver Marcelo da Luz is out to expand the world record for distance traveled in a solar car that he formerly set. He has been on the road for 11 months. The trip started in Buffalo, N.Y., and will take him to Key West, then a return to his resident Canada.

The car "can take a trip more than 300 miles on a sun-drenched day, go from 0 to 50 mph in six seconds and has a top speed of 75 mph," notes Green Car Congress and spending $2.20 on a gallon of gas. But da Luz thought to keep going, because he "wants to motivate people. He wants people to understand that a car like his can handle even the 450-mile gravel road stretching across the Arctic Circle."

Rock Hill drummers smash the world record

They didn't just smash the record, they crushed it.

Percussionists from Rock Hill High School place a new Guinness world record Saturday for the longest, single drum roll, as 28 students shared to keep up the roll on one snare drum for 27 hours, 23 seconds.

That with no trouble broke the earlier record of 24 hours, 23 seconds held by a high school in Michigan. Rock Hill High's effort began at 5 p.m. Friday at the Rock Hill Galleria and ended at 8 p.m. Saturday to applause from dozens of citizens who had gathered to fob watch the final minutes.

The happening elevates around $3,600 for Rock Hill High's Band of Distinction to buy new tools.

Of course, the record isn't official until Guinness World Records certifies it. For that to happen, Skellett must compile information for the company, including eyewitness statements, video evidence and media reports and wait for the final word.

“It's been a huge success,” said Michael Skellett, the band's percussion director, referring to the money. “Plus, we got to break a world record in the process, which is cool.”

Some students played longer than others, but no one played longer than junior Jason Piers.

Piers set what is believed to be the longest drum roll by a single person at 4 hours, 10 minutes, besting the previous mark by two minutes. Not only did he have to sustain the roll for that long, he did it in the wee hours of Saturday morning as other drummers took advantage of the downtime to get some sleep.

It wasn't something Piers set out to do. But someone mentioned the record for a single drummer for 4 hours, 8 minutes.

“So I went to the drum and I did it for 4 hours, 10 minutes,” Piers said.

The trick, he said, was playing near the edge of the drum, where the sticks would bounce better. And he made sure not to play too loudly, so as not to use too much energy.

“You want to be as conservative as possible,” he said.

But Piers' feat might not be officially recognized because he didn't fill out the necessary paperwork with Guinness in advance. He's got video of his single roll and is going to explore his options to see if Guinness will accept it anyway.

“If not,” he said, “I'll do it next year.”

The student who had the honor of silencing the drum was senior Ryli “Pop” Schmiedel, whose final strike of the snare at 8 p.m. brought the long journey to an end.

“It's really cool that they trusted me with that,” she said. “It was really nerve-wracking. I was afraid I wasn't going to get it.”

Schmiedel said confidence was high that they would break the record, but Piers' valiant four-hour stint proved key, as it gave other members a chance to rest.

“That saved us in the long run,” she said.

Snaring glory aside, Piers immediately turned his mind toward his next pressing goal.

“I'm going to go home and go straight to bed. I have church tomorrow,” he said.

Guess what he'll do at church. Yep, he'll play drums for two morning worship services.

Standing off to the side as his students prepared to finish up their 27 hour, 23 second record, Skellett, the percussion director who hadn't slept except for maybe an hour since 6 a.m. Friday, said he never doubted his students would reach their goal.

Best Job in the World - Salary USD110000

A British charity fundraiser was appointed caretaker of a tropical island on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef today, beating more than 34,000 applicants for what’s billed as the “best job in the world.”

Ben Southall will be paid A$150,000 ($110,000) to live on Hamilton Island in the northern state of Queensland for six months. His job will include exploring white sand beaches, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving -- and promoting the island to tourists in a weekly blog, or online diary.

“Everything that is offered out there I want to grasp with both hands,” the 34-year-old from Hampshire, southern England, who lists his hobbies as marathon running and climbing, said in comments broadcast live around the world from the island.

The appointment is the culmination of a marketing campaign that aims to defy the global recession and boost the number of tourists to Australia. Tourism Queensland estimates the A$1.7 million campaign generated more than A$100 million worth of publicity and may help reverse a forecast 4.1 percent decline in international visitors to Australia this year.

“We’ve certainly got a good return on our investment,” Bruce Wallace, director of market activation and publicity, said in a telephone interview. “There were only two countries in the world that our Web site didn’t receive hits from, Somalia and North Korea.”

Global Recession

Tourism Queensland unveiled its “Best Job in the World” competition in January, in the midst of the northern hemisphere winter and the gloom of a global recession.

The power of Internet chat forums and social networking sites took over, with more than 200,000 people logging onto its Web site in the first weekend, straining server capacity.

The tourism board whittled down the entrants to 16 candidates, vetting their 60-second video applications for qualities such as “an adventurous spirit” and “excellent communication skills.”

In his application video, which featured pictures of him trekking in Africa, riding an ostrich and kissing a giraffe, Southall described himself as “adventurous, crazy and energetic” with a passion for discovering new places.

Job Perks

Benefits of the job, which begins July 1, include a three- bedroom house, rent free, and a buggy to explore Hamilton Island, the largest inhabited island in the region with 800 residents. An 18-hole championship golf course, five hotels and activities including sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving draw more than 125,000 visitors a year to the island.

The campaign “demonstrates the power of the Internet that the industry needs to be able to tap into,” said Olivia Wirth, executive director of the Tourism & Transport Forum, a lobby group representing 200 tourism companies in Australia.

“It has been a very smart way for Tourism Queensland to get their message to millions of people at minimum cost” and cut through the “clutter” of television and magazine advertising at a time when there is a fall in global demand for holidays, she said.

The forecast drop in international visitor numbers to Australia this year would be the worst performance in 20 years, Tourism Australia said in December.

The A$65 billion industry employs more than 800,000 people.

World Largest Bead Mosaic Guinness Record set by Middle East Women

She is the first woman in the Middle East to enter the Guinness World Records book. And she’s just 25.

Meet Emirati Reem Al Gurg, who made it to the record books by creating what has been officially declared as the world’s largest bead mosaic.

Called Sahara Vision, the 3.75 square-metre artwork is made of a staggering 18,231 wooden beads and represents the confluence of Dubai’s reality and mysticism.

“I chose wooden beads because they reflect the colour of the desert,” said Reem, who took four months to complete the unique piece of art in 2007. By a strange coincidence, November 8 – the day she submitted her entry, was also Guinness World Records Day. But it could not make it to the 2008 edition as it had already gone into print.

But now her record-breaking feat, depicting high-rise buildings facing the desert under three moons, has found its rightful place in the 2009 Arabic edition of the Guinness World Records book. The colossal artwork was also displayed at the recent Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2009 where Reem had a book-signing session. Childhood prophecy

A nutrition teacher at Zayed University, Reem said she always wanted to do something special in life. “Years ago when I was in school, I used to tell my friends that I would break a world record some day,” she recalled. Reem said an animated picture designed by her husband for his company’s home page was what stirred her imagination and helped her conceive an image of the artwork.

It comes as no surprise therefore that she has named it after the company Sahara Vision, which deals in 3-D animation services, architectural visualisation and special effects.

Dubai, the city where Reem grew up, is however the biggest source of her inspiration. “I’m really proud to be living here. It’s amazing how much the city has changed and accomplished in such a short span of time,” she said. Inspiration

Reem loves challenges and, sure enough, has already taken up a new one – her daughter’s birthday gift.

Her daughter turns one on December 1. By then Reem hopes to write and publish a series of books in Arabic for two-year-olds and under, involving two Emirati characters, with an emphasis on local traditions.

Reem wants to exhibit her record-breaking work and said she wouldn’t mind selling it if she gets the right price.

Non Stop Job 1100 Day Guinness World Record set by Indian

He is somebody every company would yearn to hire. Why not, if he has worked for 1,100 days without leave? K Vijayan, 59, employed with a city-based hotel, hasn’t taken a single day’s leave for over three years now. Leave aside casual or sick leaves, Vijayan hasn’t even taken a single weekly off. And, this unusual feat has earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) has acknowledged that no person in the world has worked for so long continuously, without a break. “I had never thought of creating a record. I am a workaholic and work is my religion. I have never liked missing out a single workday throughout my career,” Vijayan told TOI.

Vijayan works as night auditor at Surya Palace Hotel and his work starts at 11 pm and he leaves the hotel at 9 in the morning. “I had read about such records in newspapers a few months ago. It occurred to me that I hadn’t taken a single day off for years together and hence I decided to approach the GBWR,” added Vijayan.

When Vijayan went through the attendance register in the hotel earlier this year, he found that he hadn’t taken any leave or weekly offs for 1,100 nights. He contacted the GBWR authorities in March and informed them about his achievement. GBWR officials checked their records and found that no one held world record in such category. “They acknowledged my achievement and sent me procedural forms. The process to provide me a certificate is on,” said Vijayan who also fulfils all his social obligations during day time. This arts graduate came to the city about 36 years ago and began his career with Kalyan Hotel, one of the oldest food joint.

“I am proud to have a dedicated employee like Vijayan. He has been with us for the past 13 years and has never given us a chance to complain. I often tell him to take holidays, but he always refused,” said Piyush Shah, owner of Surya Palace Hotel. Didn’t his wife or children ever object to his workaholic ways? “I never objected or argued with him. He has always been dedicated to his work and I am proud of him. Also, he does fulfil all his personal commitments despite hectic work schedule,” said his wife Mrudula.

Chanel - World Oldest Dog Celebrate his 20th Birthday

Meet Chanel the world’s oldest dog. Chanel is 20 years old and was named the oldest dog by Guinness World Records last year, and is capturing the heart of many after her appearance on the Today Show this morning. Read more and check out photos and video here.

Chanel is the world’s oldest dog and a celebrity in her own right. She was born in 1988 and will soon be celebrating her 21’s birthday. In dog years that makes her about 147. Her once red hair has turned white, and she needs special doggie glasses for her cataracts. She eats a special diet of boiled chicken, whole wheat pasta, and a special doggie treat for her teeth. She still goes on walks during the summer with her owner’s Karl and Denise Shaughnessy, but is carried for most of the way. Long gone are the days where she used to run three miles to keep her figure.

Chanel was adopted from a Virginia shelter as a 6-week-old pup. Denise only paid $25 for her and has since been rewarded with priceless, unconditional love.

While Chanel is the world’s oldest dog at the age of 20 she is still moving about and living an extraordinary life for a doggie her age.

Chanel will be inducted into Guinness Book of World Records in 2010. You can check out a full picture gallery of Chanel and her “doggles” here. She is too cute for words.

Two Year Old Girl's 156 IQ - Elise Tan Roberts

Elise Tan-Roberts, who can also recite the phonetic alphabet and count to 10 in Spanish, has an IQ of 156.

The rating makes her smarter than former Countdown maths whiz and fellow Mensa member Carol Vorderman.

The toddler's other feats include spelling her name aloud, reading the words mummy and daddy, naming all three types of triangle and reciting the normal alphabet.

Mensa welcomes the top 2% of the population based on IQ. It normally only tests children aged 10 or above, but the society accepted Elise's membership based on an intelligence measure.

Child psychologist Professor Joan Freeman used the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale test, which found she was in the top 0.2% of her age in the country.

Mensa chief executive John Stevenage said: "(Elise's parents) now realise they have an interesting challenge on their hands as she grows up."

Elise's mother Louise, 28, from Edmonton, London, said she realised her daughter was different as soon as she was born.

She took "an unusual" interest in her surroundings, uttered her first word aged just five months and took her first steps at eight-and-a-half months.

The mother told the Daily Mirror: "She just says things and you have no idea where she got it from."

Prof Freeman said the child's memory was her great gift.

The psychologist was "extremely impressed she was able to reel off the capital cities" and the phonetic alphabet.

Mensa has about 24,000 members in the UK and Ireland - about 900 of whom are aged under 18.

As well as Carol Vorderman, whose IQ is 154, other famous members include DJ and TV presenter Sir Jimmy Savile and inventor Sir Clive Sinclair.

World's Largest Caves Discovered in Vietnam

A cave discovered in Vietnam's Quang Binh province may be the largest in the world, a team of British explorers says.

British Cave Research Association explorer Howard Limbert, whose team confirmed the cave's existence, said the possible record-setting cavern is 656 feet high, 492 feet wide and at least 4 miles long, the Vietnam News Service said Friday. The explorer said strong currents and flooding prevented his team from thoroughly exploring the cave.

Previously, the largest known cavern was Deer Cave in Malaysia. The Malaysian cave is 328 feet high, 295 feet wide and 1 mile long, the Saigon Giai Phong newspaper said.

Limbert's team explored the cave in Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in mid-April before confirming its existence and size to the provincial People's Committee on Wednesday.

The Vietnam News Service said Limbert's team was the first group to explore parts of the cave, but an unidentified local resident is credited with its initial discovery 18 years ago.

Limbert said his team would return to Vietnam with more advanced equipment in 2011 to explore further.

World's Tallest Pancake Stack World Record 2009

Two hotel chefs today claimed to have toppled the record for the world's tallest pancake stack.

Sean McGinlay and Natalie King of Glasgow's Hilton Grosvenor hotel measured their pancake tower at 29.5 inches (75cm) - beating the current title by 0.4in.

The chefs mixed about 100 eggs, more than 17 pints of milk, 11lbs of flour and 6.6lbs of butter for the challenge, a hotel spokeswoman said.

The hotel's general manager Stuart Nelson said: 'It was a bit shaky towards the end but somehow we managed to pull it off.

'Special thanks must go to Sean McGinlay and the kitchen team, who have spent a great deal of time this week perfecting their pancake recipes and stacking techniques.'

According to Guinness World Records, the current official record stands at 29.1in (74cm), achieved in Slovenia in August 2008.

That 672-pancake stack took 22 hours to build.

Tommy Tiernan - Longest Solo Stand Up Comedy World Record

As you probably know next weekend Tommy Tiernan is attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the longest solo stand up show ever from 3pm on Good Friday until Dawn on Easter Sunday all in aid of the GYDS resource centre “Number 4” in Galway City . As you also may know the charity have recently been forced into a turnaround by the board of directors to refuse the money they were promised based on the diocesan feeling “uncomfortable” about the event beginning on Good Friday.

Tommy and everyone involved is more determined then ever to raise these funds and make sure they go to the marginalised young people. This is no ordinary Tommy Tiernan show. He needs to stay awake and keep managing to talk for 37 hours. He may not even be funny at times, he may even just be whispering, he may be talking rubbish. Hopefully he won’t loose his voice. But as long as he keeps going and makes it to dawn the world record will be set. Tommy needs you keep him going, feed him ideas for material, bring something with you that he can talk about.

We need all you Tommy fans to get behind him with your support. There are shows in the middle of the night, first thing in the morning, middle of the afternoon and we want some of you lunatic folks on board. Make it an Easter event with pals, your Lenten offering, or your way of helping the homeless this Easter.

We are setting aside a number of tickets for groups of 10 or more at the concession rate of €15 per ticket. Whatever your group is friends, family, students, nurses, doctors, hairdressers, shift workers, taxi drivers, teachers, messers.

Be part of this Guinness World Record attempt by an Irishman and in the process help raise these much needed funds for the homeless.

World Record for 28 Hours Non Stop Jokes Telling India

Nanduri Prabhakar, an employee of BSNL here, broke the Guinness Book of World Records by telling jokes continuously for 28 hours. He started the feat at 12.24 p.m. on Sunday and went on with the act till 4 p.m. on Monday.

The 28-hour long effort has been video-recorded and the video recording along with the observers’ records and other documents would be sent to the Guinness Book of World Record authorities. Mr. Prabhakar took a break of five minutes for every hour, which was the time allowed by the Guinness Book of World Records authorities. The existing Guinness Book of record of 24 hours is in the name of Mike Hessman of Ohio (US) who has done the feat on November 16 and 17, 1992.

Mr. Prabhakar told nearly 1,600 jokes during the marathon feat. The strain was apparent but an elated Mr. Prabhakar said he would try to improve his record further. Incidentally he created a Limca Book of Records two years ago by telling jokes continuously for 30 hours, taking a break of 10 minutes for every hour.

People who visited Kala Bharathi to witness Mr. Prabhakar’s feat donated money to Sishu Vikas, a school being run for the children of poor families. The Visakha Humour Club organised the programme under the name of Hasyarasa Dhaaaramrutam. The BSNL, the Vijay Nirman Company and Apex Hospitals supported the programme. General Manager of BSNL P. Nagaraju, MD of Vijay Nirman Vijay Kumar and AS Raja and others were present to congratulate Mr. Prabhakar when he concluded his performance.

Dan Magness Breaks World Keepy Up Guinness World Record

After about 208,333 touches of the football, Dan Magness became a Guinness world record holder today.

But that was not enough for the 25-year-old from Milton Keynes. He kept the ball in the air with his feet, thighs, chest and head until this afternoon to complete a 24-hour marathon of kick-ups in Central London.

The previous world record, held by the Brazilian Martinho Eduardo Orige, was smashed by over four hours according to clipboard-wielding officials from Guinness World Records.

The self-styled “ginger freestyler” said he had spent months on strength and stamina training. “A millisecond lapse in concentration – all the training [would] count for nothing,” he said.

Magness’s record breaking keepy-up effort took place inside a Perspex box in Covent Garden, reminiscent of the one suspended above the Thames by David Blaine, the attention-seeking magician. This time Londoners did not gather to pelt the world record challenger with eggs.

Gareth Brocklebank, Magness’s manager denied speculation that his star had taken a break when no one was looking in the early hours of this morning. “He has followed the Guinness guidelines to a tee,” he said. “He is as strong as an ox.”
