- Serve fish (whole including the head and tail) because the pronunciation for fish is the same as the word for surplus.

-Serve dumplings and hide a coin inside. The person who finds the coin wins luck for the new year.

- Buy new clothes, and especially new pants because the Chinese word for pants is "fu," a Chinese homonym for wealth or blessing.

- Children should stay up as late as possible on New Year's Eve for it is believed that the later they stay up, the longer their parents will live.

- Visit family and friends (especially elders) to pass on your wishes of good fortune for the New Year.

- Give children and singles "lai see," red envelopes full of money. Give two lai see to each child, because happiness comes in pairs. This is to pass good luck to the next generation. Business owners also give lai see to employees and associates.

- Post lucky words on the walls, written on red paper. Hang them upside down because the words for upside down and arrive sound the same. "It implies a blessing has arrived or spring has arrived," Jung said.

- Set off fireworks and blow noisemakers.


-Don't wear white or black clothing, since they are the traditional colors of mourning.

-Don't buy new shoes for the first months of the New Year, because the sound of shoe in Chinese is "hai." "Hai" is similar to the sound of sighing, which Chinese believe is not a good way to start the year.

-Don't wash your hair for the first three days of the New Year, because the Chinese word for hair is a homonym for the Chinese word for wealth. Therefore, Chinese believe it isn't a good thing to 'wash away your wealth' right at the start of the New Year.

-Floors may not be swept and garbage may not be disposed of on the first day of the New Year for fear of casting riches out the door.

-Don't swear or quarrel.

-Don't break any dishes, otherwise you may incur more misfortune for the New Year. In the event of breaking a dish, quickly say "Peace for all time," and the bad luck will be warded away.

- Don't greet people who are in mourning.-Don't drop your chopsticks.-Don't say the number 'four' (Chinese homonym for death) or mention death.

-Don't borrow or lend money.

An Australian couple who picked up an odd-looking fatty lump from a quiet beach are in line for a cash windfall.

Leon Wright and his wife took home a 14.75kg lump of ambergris, found in the innards of sperm whales and used in perfumes after it has been vomited up.

Sought after because of its rarity, ambergris can float on the ocean for years before washing ashore.

Worth up to $20 a gram, Mr Wright's find on a South Australian beach could net his family US$295,000 (£165,300).

Mythologised for thousands of years, ambergris has been referred to as "floating gold" by scientists and scavengers who long for a windfall amid the surf.

Expelled from the abdomen of the giant sperm whale, often while hundreds of kilometres away from land, ambergris is a natural excrement thought to be used by the whale as a digestion aid.

The hard beaks of giant squid, a main source of food for the whale, have often been found inside lumps of ambergris.

Initially, ambergris is a soft, foul-smelling waste matter that floats on the ocean.

But years of exposure to the sun and the salt water of the ocean transform the waste into a smooth, exotic lump of compact rock that boasts a waxy feel and a sweet, alluring smell.

NetNames manages the domain name portfolios for over 30% of the FTSE 100 companies and is an accredited registrar for the new .eu European domain name. The new .eu European domain name costs £35 per annum.

$160, 000 antique slipper stolen from the bata museum downtown canda

These jewel encrusted shoes were stolen Sunday from the downtown Bata shoe museum in Toronto.

Bata Shoe Museum officials have discovered that two more items, worth more than $55,000, were stolen from their collection on Sunday.

They had originally reported to police that a pair of gold-embroidered and jewel-encrusted slippers worth $160,000 was stolen from the downtown museum.

After another search Monday, staff discovered two more items missing from another showcase: a gold anklet, set with diamonds, rubies and emeralds, valued at $45,000 and a gold toe ring, set with diamonds and rubies ($11,000). Both date back to the 18th century.

The three items were stolen some time between noon and 5 p.m. on Sunday, police said.
“They’re very rare so the items can either be easy or hard to find,” said Toronto police Det. Const. Dave Dickinson.

“We need the public’s assistance with this. If anyone sees them, they’ll definitely recognize them. They’re one of a kind.”

Despite their monetary antique worth, the items have little or no street value, he said.
“The market for this sort of thing is small,’’ Dickinson said. “To most of the public, they’re probably not worth a lot, but to a collector or the Bata Shoe Museum, they’re very expensive.
If the gems are removed, they’re pretty much (worthless) because they’re uncut. It’s the history of the shoe that should be worth the value.”

Police continue to examine security video and conduct interviews with staff.
According to its website, the four-storey museum at the corner of Bloor St. W. and St. George St. houses more than 10,000 shoes in four galleries. Artifacts range from Chinese bound foot shoes and ancient Egyptian sandals to chestnut crushing clogs and glamourous platforms.
The museum was recently featured in the final episode of last year’s Amazing Race reality TV show.

The Aston Martin that featured in the James Bond movies "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball" is expected to sell for up to $2.5 million at a vintage motor car auction in Phoenix, Arizona in January, RM Auctions said.

The 007 Aston Martin DB5 is one of several celebrity cars at the Tennessee museum where it has been since the late 1970s. It is one of four cars commissioned by Eon Productions and used for film, tour and promotional use in the mid-60s.

1. Capitals:Avoid the temptation to capitalize words in the middle of a sentence Just To Provide Emphasis Like This. If you want to be more emphatic consider using bold face, italics, color or larger text.

2. Commas:The most common use of the comma is to join together short sentences to make a single longer sentence. We do this with one of the following small joining words: and, or, but, yet, for, nor, or so.

For example:
We have finished the work, and we are looking forward to the weekend.
Notice that the two halves of this sentence could each be sentences in their own right. They thus need to be separated with a comma and joining word. In the next example, though, we don't need a comma: We have finished the work and are looking forward to the weekend.
The halves of that sentence could not stand alone, so no comma was used.

3. Ellipsis:The ellipsis is a series of three -- and ONLY THREE -- full stops used to mark missing words, an uncertain pause, or an abrupt interruption. Avoid the temptation to use six or seven dots -- it looks amateurish. For example, we write:

Fran: Young! Miss Fine's age is only young!

4. Excessive punctuation:Only one exclamation mark or question mark should be used at a time. Consider the following over-punctuated examples:

8. Quotation marks:Users of American English should use double quotes (" "). Users of British English should choose either single quotes (' ') or double quotes and stick with them for the whole document. Incidentally, British English usage is increasingly moving towards single quotes.

9. Spaces:Modern style is to use a single space at the end of a sentence, not two. Also, most punctuation marks (e.g. commas, full stops, question marks) are not preceded by a space.

49 years old Dr. Shrikant Jichkar is a highly educated person from India with 20 post-graduate University Degrees to his credit. Began as a Medical Doctor (MBBS and MD ) he did his Law (LL.B.) with Post-graduation in International Law (LL.M.) and his Masters in Business Administration (DBM and MBA) and in Journalism (B.Journ). He did his Masters in ten subjects. M.A. (Public Administration ; M.A. (Sociology) ; M.A. (Economics); M.A. (Sanskrit); M.A. (History); M.A.(English Literature); M.A. (Philosophy); M.A. (Political Science) ; M.A. (Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology); M.A (Psychology). He got his D. Litt (Doctor of Letters) in Sanskrit , the highest of any Degree in a University. Most of his Degrees are with First Merit and he has obtained 28 Gold Medals. Between 1972 and 1990 he has written 42 University Examinations each ever summer and every winter. Limca Books of Record list him as the most qualified person in India.

In 1978 he wrote the IPS (Indian Police Service) examination and got into it, resigned, wrote the prestigious IAS (Indian Administrative Services) examination in 1980 and got into it, resigning in four months to contest his first general election.

In 1980 he was elected to Maharashtra Legislative Assemble becoming the youngest MLA in the country at 25 and subsequently became a very powerful government Minister holding 14 portfolios at a time. After 12 years in the Maharashtra Legislature he was elected to the Indian Parliament in 1992 where he was MP till 1998. In 1999 he lost the election to the Loksabha by a slender margin on 3000 votes in an electorate of 1.4 Million voters.

He rose in politics as a student and youth leader. He has worked on several important committees of the State and Central Government , including the Parliamentary Standing committee on Finance; Patents committee; the Planning Board; Resources Mobilization Committee; Taxation Reforms committee , High Power committee on Irrigation and on Transport.

In 1992 he was appointed as a One Member Committee to found the Sanskrit University in Maharashtra which he founded known as the Kavi Kulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, of which he was elected the first Chancellor. He is currently doing the work of setting up the Arsha Vijnana Gurukulam on 400 acres of land in a forest near Nagpur in India, which is a center for the study of the Vedas and Vedanta. He is also doing the work of preserving the now remaining 11 living shakhas or branches of the Vedas.

He was first associated with Swami Chinmayananda who made him the first President of Chinmaya Yuva Kendra and he traveled all over the country to establish the centers. He was then associated with Pujya Swami Dayananda since 1969. He is presently the National Co-ordinator of the AIM for Seva a movement for service in remote areas. The Sankaracharya of Kanchi has recently felicitated him with special honours for his work among Adivasis on the occasion of the Kanchi Acharyas Peetharohan Golden Jubilee. He is associated with Pujya Sri Sri Ravishankar of Art of Living, as his devotee. He is also co-ordinating the work of the Dharma Samstha Pramukh Sabha, a council of the Mahatmas and religious leaders in India. He is presently the president of Maharashtra State Marathi Encyclopedia Production Board.

He is one of the great ritualists in India being an Agnihotri who has established and maintains the three sacred Vedic fires and has himself performed the very rare Agnishtom and Vajapeya Somayajnas which have got him the title of ‘Dixit’ and ‘Somayaji’

He has travelled all around the world representing India and leading Indian delegations on several forums including the UNO, the UNESCO etc. He has one of the biggest personal libraries in India with 52,000 books. He travels all around India speaking on economic topics and giving religious discourses.

In 2000 he suffered from a very deadly type of Cancer for which he was treated in the US for a year and is now totally Cancer free.

If the vote for selecting the new Seven Wonders of the World is riding piggy-back on the ubiquitous internet and mobile phones, Taj Mahal's place hinges on your vote.

The global initiative to elect the New Seven World Wonders is hotting up with millions casting their votes from around the world to nominate their favourite wonder. Taj Mahal, the eternal symbol of love that mesmerises visitors with its sparkling white marble structure, is now awaiting your votes to find its place on top.

According to the latest trends, Taj Mahal is trailing third behind Great Wall of China and Potala Palace of Lhasa. Both the Chinese structures together have amassed some 45.92 per cent of the total votes. Taj Mahal and other Indian structures nominated have together only gathered 11.01 per cent of the votes.

According to organisers, the voting on 8888 for Indian structures has by now gathered 242053 votes. Madurai's Meenakshi Temple is also in the fray and voting on SMS for nominating the temple will be made live shortly.

The first round of votes that decide the 21 finalists would be over by end of February 2005. And till December 2005-end the final round of voting would take place to select the new Seven Wonders. The final seven are to be announced through a major international televised event on January 1, 2006.

The seven Ancient Wonders of the World were selected by Philon of Byzantium in 200 BC as a travel guide for fellow Athenians. All the seven ancient sites were located around Mediterranean basin and were one individual's selection. Of all the seven man made wonders of the ancient world only the Pyramid of Giza exists today.

The present voting for the New Seven Wonders, organisers argue, would truly and democratically elect them.
