14th January Kite Festival 2008 in Ahmedabad India

The International Kite Festival 2008 is always held at my city Ahmedabad on January 14, with the festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti. on this day people of Gujarat fly kits and they have lots of fun together, all are in the terace, if somebody cuts a kite he says "Kapyo Chhe" or "Lappet".

These are the words, which called when kits are cuts. We have colourful kits all the day flying in the sky, Kites are flown all over Gujarat, and Ahmedabad become cities of kite-flyers. On that day everyone forgets his routiine works and enjoy Uttaraya. A different different types of kites are seen in the sky. We have bright sun shine, strong wind to carries kites. Also different different foods are also eaten on that day, specially "Udhiyu and Jalebi".

On the international kite festival day, participates are from all around the world. This gives the people of Ahmedabad the change to see the unusual kites brought by the visitors some of which are truly works of art. Visitors are very much interested to know more about kites and its arts.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will tomorrow inaugurate an 'International Kite Festival 2007' here at the Sabarmati river front.

Seventy domestic and 74 international kite flyers from 21 countries including China, Singapore, Malaysia, France, South Africa, Netherlands, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, Australia, Spain, Thailand, Cambodia, UK, Finland, Denmark and Lebanon will participate in the four day long event.

The function will be presided over by Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, an official release said. On the opening day of the event, an 'Adithya stuthi' will be offered by the students of Bhagwat Vidyapith, Sola.

Around 2,500 students will also render 'Surya Kavach.' A 'Heritage Walk' is also being organised here by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on January 12, from the Swami Narayan temple to Manek Chowk, between 0800 hours to 0930 hours. Thereafter, the kite flying competition will take place River Front from 1000 hours to 1700 hours.

Besides, a cultural programme 'Sattavan thi Subhash' has also been organised by the Department of Sports, Youth and Culture at the river front. Four theme pavilions, on religious tourism, eco and wildlife tourism, adventure tourism and heritate tourism will be set up there by the respective rural departments of the State Government.

A food court with 20 stalls is also being set up at the site, the release added.
