Elephant in the Room - India's Biggest Art Work by Ryan International School

Today, 3,000 Ryan International School (Rohini) children joined aerial artist Daniel Dancer in New Delhi to form the image of an elephant to remind their leaders that they can’t afford to ignore climate change – the elephant in the living room.
 

On October 22 of this year, India's Environment Ministry, Jairam Ramesh, declared the elephant a “National Heritage Animal” to highlight it's unique role in India's history, culture, and ecology. It is for that reason that thousands of school children came together to form a giant image of an elephant in the country’s capital as a symbol of India's wish to preserve their history, culture, and ecology by countering the threat of climate change and taking actions that can lead the world back below 350 ppm CO2.
 

Like the tiger and other fauna of India and South Asia, the elephant, too, is affected by climate change. Increased drought from climate change as well as increased competition with humans, both as a result of development practices and climate migrations, could lead to significant loss of habitat. Not only is that bad news for elephants, but these habitats are now some of the vital remaining carbon sinks across the globe. If lost, it would further exacerbate climate change. Other potentially disasterous repercussions would include the rising seas along India's coasts.

Non Stop 40 hours Konkani Song World Records India

AN INDIAN language, Konkani, has found its way into the record books. Thanks to the Konkani Nirantari team and Mandd Sobhann, which successfully sang non-stop Konkani songs for 40 hours in the coastal city of Mangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka, the non-stop signing has found its way into the Guinness Book of World Records.

The feat was finally accomplished on Sunday night at 10 pm. A total of 1,711 singers and 44 groups were involved in the feat. The groups sang 645 Konkani songs non-stop and broke the record held by Brazil. The participants were from the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Goa.

The marathon exercise began at 6 am on January 26, 2008 and ended at 10 pm on January 27, 2008. The record for the "World’s Longest Singing Marathon by Multiple Singers” was previously held by a group from Ulbra, Brazil, called "Communidade Evangelica Luterana Sao Paulo". It sang for 36 hours during July 3-4, 2004. Keith Pullin, representative of the Guinness Book of World Records, officially handed over the Guinness World Record Certificate. He also handed over a leather-bound copy of The Guinness Book of World Records to the organisers.

This is the 974th record from India, which has found its way into the Guinness Book of World Records. "There have been approximately around 973 records from India or relating to India; which have found their way into the Guinness record", says Pullin.

"The Kalangan Amphitheatre, the venue of the record-breaking event, erupted in a triumphant chorus of whistles, loud applause and congratulations", says Roshan De Souza, a US-based Mangalorean and the moderator of the website, The website, www.mangalorean.com, provided regular updates during the entire 40-hour-long singing. Konkani as a language is spoken by people who live or have lived along the Konkan belt. The region is spread over four states, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala.

"The recent world record should unite all Konkani-speaking people across India and the world. The language now has unified on the world stage", says Malwin De Souza, a Goan, based in Cayman Islands.

Konkani is the official language of Goa. But there have been differences over the script, the Roman and Devnagiri in Goa. The Goan government has accorded official recognition to the Devanagiri script, leaving the Roman script users to fend for themselves. The differences over the scripts are not restricted to Goa but spread across Kerala and Karnataka. People in Kerala write the language using the Malayalam script and people in Karnataka use the Kannada script for the purpose.

Limca Book of Record 2008 for Indian Radio Show

The event was flagged off by Actress Hanssika Motwani (from Aapka Saroor fame) and music director cum singer Anand Raj Anand amidst a huge crowd in Mumbai. In Hyderabad the event was flagged off by famous Telugu actor Raja along with the crew of “happy days” movie. In Kolkata the event was flagged off by actor Parambrato and BIG 92.7 RJs among a huge crowd of people cheering the participants there was also one wild card entry in Kolkata. Representatives from Limca book of records were present at the venue and in Delhi the event was flagged off by Mr Punit Mathur, Station Director, BIG 92.7 FM.

Before the event was flagged off a small briefing session was conducted for the participants to take them through the rules and regulation of the contest. Among the spectators there were cheerleaders, relatives of participants who enthusiastically cheered the participants to keep their morale up. BIG 92.7 FM through its outdoor broadcasting studio broadcasted the event live on-air in all the centres.

World Records for Acting in 754 Indian Films

Brahmanandam has earned a place in the Guiness Book of World Records for acting in a phenomenal 754 Telugu films in a career spanning 20 years. Dr Brahmanandam confirmed that he got the official confirmation on Wednesday from the Guinness Foundation.
Brahmanandam is the comedy king of Telugu cinema. He is the household comedian of Andhra Pradesh

Prior to movies, he was a Telugu lecturer in the town of Sattenapalli, a rural town in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He began his filming career with popular Telugu director and writer, Jandhyala's Aha Na Pellanta in which Rajendra Prasad played the lead role. Owing to his comic abilities, he is now one of the most respected comedians in the history of Telugu cinema.

Every year he acts in a minimum of 35 films, for the past 22 years. According to him, Jandhyala was the best comedy director he has ever worked with. He is presently writing a book based on his experiences in the film industry.

Greatest Average Mileage Run Daily Record GWR

Three years after finding an entry into the Guinness Book, long distance runner Tirtha Kumar Phani has now improved upon his own world record for the Greatest Average Mileage Run Daily.

Phani, now 48 years of age, had etched his name in the 2004 and 2005 editions of the prestigious almanac for his astounding feat of running an average of 61.824 km a day for a whole year from August, 2006 to July, 1997. He had then covered more than 22,000 km over a one-year period.

Phani, who hails from Lalgola in West Bengal's Murshidabad district but now settled in the metropolis, achieved a new record in the same category by running an average of 61.866 km a day from June 30, 2006 to June 29, 2007 here. He ran a total of 22,581.09 km spread over the one-year period.

The bespectacled Phani has received a certificate and a letter from the Guinness World Records confirming the improved mark.

"The Greatest Average Mileage Run Daily is 61.866 km (38.44 miles) and was achieved by Tirtha Kumar Phani (India) from June 30, 2006 to June 29, 2007, in Calcutta, India," said the certificate and the letter.

However, the letter said that the certificate did not guarantee Phani an automatic entry into the organisation's world famous annual books. But it said, "We do consider all new records for inclusion in all future Guinness World Record publication and products".

Phani told PTI that he attempted to better his old record as per the directive of the GWR.
