Indian Child sets World Record with 24-hr Musical feat

Being able to play a musical instrument for 24 hours continuously may help 12-year-old boy Manu to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. Manu, who lives in Kozhikode district performed on Jaltarang at the Kozhikode Town Hall for 24 hours by breaking the earlier record of 16 hours of non-stop play by a boy Rama Krishna from Andhra Pradesh.

Jaltarang literally means 'waves in water'. But the instrument conveys the motion of sound created or modified by water. It is one of the most prominent and ancient among musical instruments. A student of Government Ganpat Boys High School, Chalappuram, Manu enthralled the audience with his performance, which started on Monday morning (24 March) at 8 and finished the next day on 25th March at 8 am.

The performance was inaugurated by renowned Gyanpeeth award winner, M T Vasudevan Nair of Kerala along with city Mayor M. Bashkaran, Manu's teacher and parents. Manu played the Jaltarang continuously for 24 hours with 2 breaks of 10 minutes each after every 8 hours. He played Hamsadhwani Raag on the Jaltarang and showed equal felicity in Carnatic, Hindustani and Western music streams during the event.

As many as 120 artists including children of his age group accompanied him on the violin, the tabla (Indian percussion instrument) and other musical instruments to make the show vibrant. Manu has been practicing Jaltarang for the past four years under the guidance of his mentor Kozhikode Radhakrishnan. He became interested in the instrument after he saw his teacher playing Jaltarang in his house, where he stayed back after his performance.

"I am really delighted at achieving this record. I practice daily from 8 am in the morning to 5:30 in the evening and I can do it for some more time. I really liked to play the rhythm of water symphony. I can even play the tabla with ease. It just happened that I saw my master practicing it one day, and decided to practice," said Manu while talking to media persons after his performance.

According to Manu, it was his grandfather who actually inspired him to attempt this feat after seeing his rigorous practice for a minimum five hours daily on the Jaltarang and tabla. The recorded video footage and other necessary documents will soon be sent to the Guinness Book of World Record authorities for approval.

Indian Sand Artist set Limca Book of Records

Sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik will find his mention in the Limca Book of Records 2009 for the third time next year for being the first Indian to win the world champion title twice at the USF World Double Championship in Berlin.

On the second year of the championship, the artist created a 25ft high sculpture based on the theme of global warming depicting a polar bear sitting on a globe and praying with three faces representing Africa, Europe and Asia supporting the base.

“My second win is a dream come true. I am glad that I could make my country proud twice,” said the artist, adding that Bijay Ghosh, the editor of the Limca Book of Records, confirmed the news last evening.

After Sudarshan returned from the USF championship, Union tourism minister Ambika Soni approached Sudarshan to don the cap of the Orissa brand ambassador for its Incredible India campaign.

“Talks have not been finalised yet, but we did have a discussion,” said Sudarshan.

“The ministry wishes that I promote the Incredible India campaign when I participate in international meets,” he added. So far, his global warming theme has been taken to 37 countries.

“I have requested the government to recognise sand form as a genuine art. I have also pleaded the government to mull a sand park near Puri, where many such sculptures may be displayed.

The ministry officials have assured me of discussing the matter,” he said. Sudarshan has participated in 37 international championships and has won in a number of them. After fulfilling his dreams of creating 100 sandy Taj Mahal, Sudarshan now wants to concentrate on the issue of global warming.

“Global warming is a matter of concern for the entire world, including Orissa. I have approached the UN asking their help in this regard,” he added. The artist is expected to carry the world champion title for a period of a year.

Earlier, Sudarshan’s exhibition on the theme of Jesus Christ on the Puri beach in 2007 and the one on Santa Claus in 2006 had received a mention in the Limca books.

Made of 600 tonnes of sand, the sculpture of Jesus Christ on the Puri beach in Christmas 2007 was 60ft long.

Zee Kannada set Limca Book of World Records

Zee Kannada has entered the Limca Book of World Records for its unique handkerchief campaign in support of the Indian team in the Cricket World Cup 2007. The channel's record breaking feat is mentioned under The Biggest and the Smallest section.

Zee Kannada is the first Kannada channel to enter the record books. The campaign, launched in February 2007, saw the channel's team travel across the state to over 50 schools, 25 colleges, IT companies, NGOs, media houses, malls, institutions, shops, and succeeded in collecting over 55,000 hankies, thus creating the world's longest chain of signed handkerchiefs.

Anup Chandrasekharan, business head, Zee Kannada, said, "We at Zee Kannada strive to do things differently and do the best. Records and awards are definitely materialistic recognition for such efforts. This is entirely a team effort and would not have been possible otherwise. The team is ecstatic to be a part of the prestigious Limca Book of World Records."

The chain extended over 17 km in distance. The record was created amidst a lot of fanfare at an event, which was inaugurated by Mysore royal family scion Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar at Palace Grounds, Bangalore. The event also witnessed the record of maximum number of signed handkerchiefs collected (55,000) and the biggest handkerchief with signatures (measuring 48 ft x 52.5 ft).

The campaign had received an overwhelming response not only from the people of Karnataka, but from the entire country. Prominent signatories included Subhash Chandra, chairman, Essel Group, signing the first handkerchief; followed by the then chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy; the then deputy CM, BS Yediyurappa; and various personalities like former home minister, MP Prakash; member of the board and director HR, Infosys, Mohandas Pai; Chenraj Jain, chairman, Jain Group of Institutions; artiste Umashree; swimmer Nisha Millet; and music director Hamsalekha, among many others

30 Hours Joking Limca Book of Record

There are as many people waiting for their calls to get connected as those on the waiting list for telephone connection. This was the joke making the rounds in the past and before technology improved a lot, said BSNL general manager P. Nagaraju aptly at a function on Thursday evening when Nanduri Prabhakar completed his 30 hours and 10 minutes non-stop rendering of jokes in his bid to enter the Limca Book of Records.

Incidentally Mr. Prabhakar is working for BSNL and this might have stopped him cracking jokes on his own organisation, quipped some one in the audience.

Mr. Nagaraju, film actor "Kallu" Chidambaram, stage personality Kasi Viswanadham, writer and film actor Raavi Kondala Rao and others warmly congratulated Mr. Prabhakar.

Mr. Prabhakar, secretary of the Visakha Humour Club, broke the record of 25 hours set by Sankara Narayana of Hyderabad in 2004. His record has to be ratified by the Limca Book of Records. All the details of the show, certified by prominent personalities of the city will be sent to the publishers. A beaming Prabhakar said he wants to make an attempt enter the Guinness Book of Records.

"The Guinness Book has not yet opened a category for a feat like this but they will examine my application and frame some rules if they are to accept my entry" he said.

Mr. Prabhakar decided to break the Hyderabad man's record and started his efforts in the right earnest said club president Raavi Gopikrishna. He practiced for an hour every day for the last two months by speaking aloud.

A bank of jokes is available as the club members can remember all the jokes heard during the monthly programme held since 2004. The record-breaking attempt was named Hasya Dhaaramrutam and was organised to raise funds for Sishu Vikas, a school run for slum children.
This also met the condition of Limca Book of Records that donations collected during a record-breaking attempt must go to an organisation like Sishu Vikas.

Mr. Prabhakar was allowed a break of 10 minutes for every hour. He took only liquid food during the feat. Many volunteered to record Prabhakar's feat for the record book. Retired chief general manager of BSNL J. Ramachandra Rao was there when Prabhakar started the attempt at 12.10 p.m. on Wednesday. Kallu Chidambaram, Kasi Viswanadham, SBI employees' union leader J.P. Sharma, "F.M. Babai" and others recorded the feat.

World Largest Tea Party India World Record

As more than 30,000 people on Sunday (February 24, 2008) raised their designer cups and took a sip of tea, Indore city of Madhya Pradesh set a new record for hosting the largest tea party. Citizens responded with enthusiasm to the novel event and started arriving at a stadium, the venue for the function, well ahead of the scheduled time of 3.30 p.m. and within an hour all seats were taken.

The stadium was divided into four sections and people were given entry only on the basis of their registration passes.

After singers Shreya Ghoshal and Krishna entertained the gathering with their melodious songs, the gates were closed at 4.30 p.m. and volunteers started serving tea to the guests in designer cups - which were later gifted to participants as mementos. Twenty minutes later, a new record was created.

At 6.30 p.m., a Guinness Book of World Record representative announced Indore to be the host of the biggest tea party with over 30,000 people sipping the Brook Bond Red Label tea, breaking the previous record of 14,718 people taking tea in Nishiao city of Japan in 2006.

The event, organised by the Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar, also raised funds to the tune of Rs 5 crore for city development.

Indore mayor Umashashi Sharma and Ramesh Chandra Agarwal of the Dainik Bhaskar group received a certificate for the record from the Guinness Book representative amid an impressive show of fireworks and festivities.

Limca Book Records for breaks beer bottles on own head

A youth in Orissa has broken at least 185 beer bottles on his head and about 100 tube lights on his body in an attempt to create a new world record.

Ramiya Ranjan Parida, a 20-year-old from Malkangiri, some 700 km from here, demonstrated his feat to hundreds of people in his hometown Wednesday, eyewitnesses said.At the beginning of his stunt, two of Parida's aides beat him up with old tube lights one by one and smashed at least 100 tube lights in the process, Binash Kumar Mishra, a local martial art trainer, told IANS.

After that Parida himself picked up empty beer bottles kept on a table and broke them one by one on his head, Mishra said and added that he broke at least 185 bottles. Parida took just nine minutes and five seconds to break all the tube lights and beer bottles, he added.

"I have been practising it for the past several months and hoped to create a world record," Parida, who teaches martial arts to children in the same town, told IANS over telephone.

"It is the inner confidence that helped me to do the amazing stunt."
He said his feat has been recorded and would be sent to Limca book of records.
Rakesh Kumar Ludam, assistant surgeon of a nearby hospital, who examined Parida before and after, said: "Although he sustained some minor injuries on his head and body, he was absolutely normal after performing such a dangerous stunt. I am really surprised." (IANS)
