The World Dodgeball Society (WDS), the premier co-ed dodgeball and social organization based on nostalgia and camp of the 80s, is teaming up with Next Level Athletic Sports to sponsor the students of University of California, Irvine (UCI) in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest dodgeball game. This attempt will be part of a campus-wide Spirit Rally, with a day of activities leading up to the massive dodgeball game, during which UCI hopes to break the current record, held by University of Alberta, of nearly 1200 participants.
The game will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 22 on the UCI campus. The projected turnout is approximately 2000 participants – 800 more than the current record – and everyone on campus, including staff, is invited to join the game. The World Dodgeball Society sponsors the event by providing balls, rules and game infrastructure. Next Level Athletic Sports facilitates and administers record-breaking efforts.
"We're always looking for new ways to raise awareness and spread our love of dodgeball," says Michael "Handsome" Costanza, founder of WDS. "Attempting a world record-breaking game is a cause after our own hearts, and we applaud UCI for undertaking such a massive task."
The objective of dodgeball is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with thrown balls and catching a ball thrown by an opponent. Once all of the players on one team are eliminated, the game ends.
