Mexico City breaks Mentos geyser world record

Mexico City beats the Chinese world record for the largest number of simultaneously erupting Mentos geysers, sending thousands of litres of fizzy drink into the air.

With 2,433 participants of all ages the event topped the leader board, beating China, who held a similar experiment in June but reached only 2,175 erupting Mentos and soda geysers.

The experiment involves dropping a packet of Mentos sweets into a 2-litre bottle of fizzy drink, causing the liquid to shoot up to two meters into the air.

A Guinness World Records adjudicator was present Saturday to confirm a new mark being set.

"It was great, everyone was excited and they could tell they were here and they wanted to be a part of history and once all those fountains erupted it was just incredible to see," Mike Janela said.

Despite the difficulties of organizing a crowd of nearly 2,500 people to all drop the Mentos simultaneously into the bottle, event organisers managed to get enough people to beat the record. Most participants were left drenched.
