Mandan businesses attempt to break slip-and-slide record

BISMARCK — If you’re looking for a thrill and a chance at making a small piece of history, grab that swimsuit and head to a North Dakota ski resort this weekend.

Mandan businesses CiNcity Designs and Huff Hills are attempting to break the world record for longest slip and slide on Saturday.

The slide will be more than 1,100 feet long, and sliders will be able to use the ski resort’s chairlift to get to the top, said Nic Cruz, owner of CiNcity Designs.

Cruz said he was looking to host a fun event and asked for suggestions on Facebook.

“A number of ideas came in. One was a slip and slide,” he said. “Of course, they probably meant for it to be like any other slip and slide. Anyone that knows me knows we try to make them as big as possible.”

According to CiNcity Designs, the world record for a slip and slide is 600 feet long. Creating a slide double that length and with roughly 250 feet of vertical drop took a lot of legwork, Cruz said.

He called many places trying to find someone willing to make a custom-made enormous slide.

“You can imagine how that conversation went,” Cruz said.

Besides the large slide, Cruz said they’re also working to have a smaller slide or two to help with traffic or for those wary of riding the big one.

Jill Castleberry of CiNcity Designs said they contacted Guinness World Records, but they’re not sure if anyone will make it to the event.

CiNcity Designs will shoot video of the slide being measured to submit, she said.

The effort will cost about $7,500, but Cruz expects 1,000 to 2,000 people to participate. The publicity will also be worth it, he said.

“I knew right away as soon as we started talking about it that people were going to want to get involved, and it was going to be something that would be all over the place,” he said.
