Taj Mahal - Seven Wonders of the World 2006 - Voting
If the vote for selecting the new Seven Wonders of the World is riding piggy-back on the ubiquitous internet and mobile phones, Taj Mahal's place hinges on your vote.
The global initiative to elect the New Seven World Wonders is hotting up with millions casting their votes from around the world to nominate their favourite wonder. Taj Mahal, the eternal symbol of love that mesmerises visitors with its sparkling white marble structure, is now awaiting your votes to find its place on top.
According to the latest trends, Taj Mahal is trailing third behind Great Wall of China and Potala Palace of Lhasa. Both the Chinese structures together have amassed some 45.92 per cent of the total votes. Taj Mahal and other Indian structures nominated have together only gathered 11.01 per cent of the votes.
According to organisers, the voting on 8888 for Indian structures has by now gathered 242053 votes. Madurai's Meenakshi Temple is also in the fray and voting on SMS for nominating the temple will be made live shortly.
The first round of votes that decide the 21 finalists would be over by end of February 2005. And till December 2005-end the final round of voting would take place to select the new Seven Wonders. The final seven are to be announced through a major international televised event on January 1, 2006.
You could vote by typing "Taj" to 8888. Or by calling on the special lines open for voting, and collecting the six-digit code for voting. With the code one can cast the vote on the website of New seven Wonders.
The seven Ancient Wonders of the World were selected by Philon of Byzantium in 200 BC as a travel guide for fellow Athenians. All the seven ancient sites were located around Mediterranean basin and were one individual's selection. Of all the seven man made wonders of the ancient world only the Pyramid of Giza exists today.
The present voting for the New Seven Wonders, organisers argue, would truly and democratically elect them.
